Relating Training To Job Satisfaction: A Survey Of Online Faculty Members, Brian Hoekstra
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
As the online education market continues to mature, institutions of higher education will respond to student demand by employing quality faculty members. Faculty members need unique training to successfully teach online. While the effect of training on job satisfaction has been investigated in the realm of business, it has not been tested extensively in the realm of online higher education. A convenience sample of 497 Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC) faculty members was invited to participate, and 148 responded. A quantitative study utilizing regression analysis investigated the relationship between the training methodology of online course module completion and job …

A challenge with upper level biology labs is that experiments cannot normally be done in a 3-hour window. It can also be a challenge to stay motivated when doing labs with predetermined outcomes. Third, a “one size fits all” laboratory can be boring for those of us with previous experience. Finally, having to share a small lab space with many classmates simultaneously makes working efficiently difficult. An unexpectedly large enrollment in our molecular biology lab course provided our professor with an opportunity to use a class project to address the above concerns. One of our professors has a collection of …

Diminishing Horizons: A Critical Look At History Education In America, Lisa N. Eekhoff
Diminishing Horizons: A Critical Look At History Education In America, Lisa N. Eekhoff
Master of Education Program Theses
Throughout the twentieth century, the structure of history education in elementary schools has shifted from a traditional, chronological structure to the expanding horizons structure. This thesis examines the philosophical underpinnings of each structure in light of a biblical view of teaching history. Emphasis is placed on historical understanding, training in historical analysis, and sense of identity. It is proposed that a chronological structure may present the child with a deeper understanding of historical events as well as a clearer view of historical principles. Additionally, it is proposed that a chronological structure may impart a more biblical view of self in …
Service Learning In Christian High Schools Associated With Christian Schools International, Russell J. Smies
Service Learning In Christian High Schools Associated With Christian Schools International, Russell J. Smies
Master of Education Program Theses
This study examines the frequency of the implementation of service learning in Christian Schools International (CSI) high schools in the United States and Canada. Additionally, this study examines the perceived effectiveness of service learning programs in these schools. The researcher collected data through a survey of 78 school leaders. The survey questions utilized a Likert scale response in which the responses were coded and averaged. Of the 78 school leaders surveyed, 63.2% of the respondents indicated that their school does service learning. The study found that schools are planning their service learning opportunities in accordance with accepted standards more than …

Teaching Technical Engineering Courses From A Christian Perspective: Two Examples, Charles C. Adams
Teaching Technical Engineering Courses From A Christian Perspective: Two Examples, Charles C. Adams
Pro Rege
Engineering professors, like those of the natural sciences, usually teach by breaking the subject matter into parts, that is, courses and activities that are logically abstract from each other. While together comprising a coherent whole, those individual parts too easily foster abstractionism, the view that such subjects as calculus, fluid mechanics, engineering design, and engineering ethics “really are” separable from one another. Such a view militates against a Christian perspective of engineering, technology, and reality in general by replacing the organic wholeness of life before the face of God with the compartmentalization that is characteristic of modern science and naturalism. …

The demands for a statistically literate society are increasing, and the introductory statistics course ("Stat 101") remains the primary venue for learning statistics for the majority of high school and undergraduate students. After three decades of very fruitful activity in the areas of pedagogy and assessment, but with comparatively little pressure for rethinking the content of this course, the statistics education community has recently turned its attention to use of randomization-based methods to illustrate core concepts of statistical inference. This new focus not only presents an opportunity to address documented shortcomings in the standard Stat 101 course (for example, improving …
