Teaching Information Literacy: A Review Of 100 Syllabi, Rachael E. Elrod, Elise D. Wallace, Cecelia B. Sirigos

This study presents an analysis of 100 syllabi of creditbearing information literacy (IL) courses from colleges and universities across the United States. The objective was to determine how IL courses were being presented and taught in academic settings; how many credits were offered; the duration of the course; platform used to teach - face to face, online, or other methods; how students were graded; what types of assignments were used, and what topics were being taught and how. Discovery tools such as Primo, EBSCO Discovery Service, Summon, and WorldCat Local aim to make scholarly research more intuitive for students in part because of their single interface for searching across multiple platforms, including the library, fee-based databases, and unique digital collections. Discovery tools are in sync with the way many undergraduates look for information because they offer a more “Google-like” experience in contrast with previous methods of research that required first knowing which database to use, then searching each one differently according to its specifications. [Poster Presentation] Pre-service teachers at Boise State University enrolled in a piloted one-credit library research course, in which the POGIL method was used to teach information literacy and Web 2.0 skills. The faculty librarian employed the POGIL learning method in order to improve students’ depth of learning and increase their engagement with the information-seeking process. Learning outcomes included building pre-service teachers’ content knowledge; increasing familiarity with inquiry learning; recognizing and solving information problems using the Big6 Skills framework; evaluating primary and secondary sources; and utilizing state-funded information resources in their teaching.
