This has caught the eye of alarmists and so discussions have ensued over offshoring, national security, economic loss and future impact in the United States. Alarmists and proponents of policies promoting more science, engineering and math have pointed out the trends in overseas growth and US offshoring with a flurry of statistics …

Communicative Practices That Lead To Timely High School Graduation Against All Odds: A Positive Deviance Inquiry In A Predominantly Hispanic School, Patricia Teresa A

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The school dropout rate among Hispanics is a major financial, educational, and public concern in the United States. However, some school districts that primarily enroll Hispanic students are succeeding in retaining and graduating their students against all odds, utilizing resources already present within their community. These institutions are "positive deviants" - they are "deviants" because they are not the norm and "positive" because they embody desirable outcomes. In such high schools are enrolled students, who against all odds, work their way to timely graduation. They are positive deviants within their institution. The present study conducted in a U.S.-Mexico border city …

Improvement Of Complex Decision Making Using System Dynamics And Zachman Framework Techniques, Bharath Bhushan Dantu

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Modeling representations of complex systems useful for the examination of changes that occur in any part or whole of these systems must allow for the performance of a requisite variety of essential analyses, in order to cover decision contingencies that have the potential to sway outcomes to extreme values. The purpose of sophisticated modeling techniques is to make the model as realistic a reflection of the real world as possible, considering all constraints of available data, analyst time availability, and computational resources needed to evaluate the model. The fundamental purpose of decision making methods is to create a quantitative representation …

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: Integrating Sequential Narratives Into An English Language Learner's Curriculum, Cira Michelle Montoya

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The following thesis aims to explore the subject of using comics in the classroom, particularly with English Language Learner (ELL) students. Do the images, vocabulary, and contextual cues found within comics and graphic novels positively affect language comprehension and writing skills of ELL students when these texts are integrated into a tailored curriculum? Within my research I have composed an extensive literature review comprised of two major sections. The first section aims to highlight the use of comics to assist struggling readers, again focusing on ELL students. The second section compiles a list of comics and graphic novels I reviewed …

The World In Pictures: Aesthetics And Visual Culture In The Art Classroom, Melissa Burger Jan 2011

The World In Pictures: Aesthetics And Visual Culture In The Art Classroom, Melissa Burger

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The intent of this thesis is to present an argument for the inclusion of aesthetics and the aesthetics of visual culture within the art education curriculum. Technological advancement has created an age of unprecedented dependence on visual imagery; the pervasive (and sometimes misleading) visual culture of contemporary society affects the way in which individuals understand and relate to their world. The study of the aesthetics of visual culture can impact values within society and culture through the formation of self-identity, maintaining culture, and instituting cultural changes. An engaging visual arts program that builds upon students' lived experiences may be the …

School Based Management In Colorado Public Schools: The Impact Of Administrative Decision Making On The Achievement Of Low-Socio Economic And Minority Students, Belinda A. Lujan Jan 2011

School Based Management In Colorado Public Schools: The Impact Of Administrative Decision Making On The Achievement Of Low-Socio Economic And Minority Students, Belinda A. Lujan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

One of the most popular reform initiatives of the 20th century was the decentralization of administrative services and decision making in public schools. The implementation of site-based decision making (SBDM) or school-based management (SBM) was an effort to delegate decision making authority to the schools sites. The hope was that those working closest to the students would be able to make the best decision to improve student achievement. As popular as this reform effort became, over the years there has not been much research to measure its direct impact on student learning and achievement especially for minority and low-socio economic …

Making The Honor Roll: Can Schools Learn From Business Excellence?, Oscar Humberto Salcedo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Our schools and school systems are feeling crunched from different directions. Some stakeholders are clamoring for more accountability, others for better results, and still others to do more with less funding. It is not surprising then that school communities are trying different approaches in an attempt to be responsive to different voices. Several schools have decided to borrow the disciplines of the International Standard known as "ISO 9001:2000" (hereafter ISO 9001) from the business realm in an attempt to address these pressures. This research investigates the applicability and benefits of ISO 9001, as perceived by school administrators and educators …

Computational Fluid Analysis Of G-12 Parachute, Jesus Lucio Valles Jan 2011

Computational Fluid Analysis Of G-12 Parachute, Jesus Lucio Valles

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The main focus is on the Computational fluid interaction of the effect of parachutes in use on stresses and forces in the material. Constant research is being done to understand how air behaves when it interacts with parachutes. Due to the high turbulence and chaotic air behavioral, it is difficult to predict the behavior of the parachute. The stresses and pressure measurements are nearly impossible to take when in actual use. By simulating such problem in a computer software major advancement is made. The measurements are now taken and the behavior of the parachute is obtained. Rather than having to …
