Studies by Hetherington, Stanley-Hagen, and Anderson in 1989 (cited in Kurtz & Deverensky, 1993) indicated that approximately 45 percent of all children born in the United States since 1970 will experience an average of six childhood years in a single parent home as a consequence of divorce.
