Education, Autonomy, And Civic Virtue, Richard Dagger
Education, Autonomy, And Civic Virtue, Richard Dagger
Political Science Faculty Publications
The major cause of our crisis in education is lack of agreement on the purpose of education. We can agree on what that purpose is, Richard Dagger argues. if we define it as the promotion of autonomy and civic virtue. Autonomy and civic virtue are often taken to be incompatible because one has to do with individual liberty and the other with collective responsibility. Dagger shows that the charge of incompatibility does not hold up under analysis. The two terms are, rather, complementary.

Knowledge Of And Response To Copyright Law, School Copyright Policy, And Copyright-Related Issues: Survey Of Secondary School Principals And Librarians, Koleta B. Tilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of this study was that, with the impact of new media and delivery systems, principals and librarians must respond to copyright issues in order to remain informed about the copyright law and the legal use of media. The purpose of this study was to gather and evaluate educator response to issues related to copyright. The study was conducted with a sample of regionally accredited secondary schools in the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. The Relationship Of Personality Type To Leader Style And Perceived Effectiveness Among Dental Hygiene School Administrators, Susan J. Willette
The Relationship Of Personality Type To Leader Style And Perceived Effectiveness Among Dental Hygiene School Administrators, Susan J. Willette
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify personality types among dental hygiene school administrators and faculty and to determine if correlations existed between leader style, ideologies of leader style, perceived effectiveness, and personality type. Selected demographic variables were also examined. The dimensions of personality investigated were derived from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: extroversion, introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging, and perceiving. The leadership behavior dimensions were the two dimensions of the real and ideal Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaires: consideration and initiating structure. Effectiveness was measured by a 39 item Likert-type instrument based on Tucker's (1981) categorical listing of chairperson …
Natural-Resources Education In Utah's Public Schools, John J. Van Niel
Natural-Resources Education In Utah's Public Schools, John J. Van Niel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Several aspects of natural-resources education were explored in this study. First, a statewide survey of science, social studies, and elementary teachers was conducted to determine the current form and extent of natural-resources education in Utah. Returns were received from 51% of the surveyed teachers. The percent of time devoted to natural resources, the factors affecting natural-resources instruction, and the need to improve that instruction were assessed.
Utilizing that information, the Natural-Resources Curriculum Framework was developed. The Framework is designed to provide educators with the essential concepts to be included in a comprehensive natural-resources program.
Finally, examples of classroom support materials …
Minerva At Large: A Study Of The Leadership Styles And Educational Philosophies Of The Department Of Education Secretaries, Mark Y. Herring
Minerva At Large: A Study Of The Leadership Styles And Educational Philosophies Of The Department Of Education Secretaries, Mark Y. Herring
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1979, President James E. Carter signed into law the thirteenth Cabinet-level office, the Department of Education. Although the United States has had a department, bureau, or office of education since 1867, the newly established Department of Education gave education a seat at the Cabinet table. Since that time, four individuals have served as secretaries: Shirley M. Hufstedler, Terrel H. Bell, William J. Bennett, and Lauro F. Cavazos. Examined in this study were the importance of leadership styles and educational philosophies as exhibited by the four secretaries. A tertiary concern viewed the role of the federal government in education. Leadership …

The Limits Of Linear Modes Of Inquiry Into Naturalistic World-Views: A Case Study Of Cherokee Culture, Karen L. Sorensen, Charles G. Wieder
The Limits Of Linear Modes Of Inquiry Into Naturalistic World-Views: A Case Study Of Cherokee Culture, Karen L. Sorensen, Charles G. Wieder
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
We begin with the cultural-anthropological assumption that a people’s world-view is based in concepts of time and process, and is reflected in the ceremonies, customs, rituals, and other traditional patterns of social conduct within the society. In a case study of the Native American Cherokee, linear modes of inquiry, characteristic of Western science, are shown to be limited in their capacity to examine and appreciate these dimensions of culture in pre-literate societies. It is suggested that those aspects of our own culture which are grounded in aesthetic value may also be relatively inaccessible for the same reason. By examining meanings …
Acting Out Caring: An Andogynous Trait, Clayton Funk
Acting Out Caring: An Andogynous Trait, Clayton Funk
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
A problem in gender studies concerns frequent critique of sex-role stereotypes. But how often do we analyze characteristics that men and women have in common? The notion is doubtful that women must be essentially nurturant and empathic, and that men must be analytical and assertive. The strongest educators possess the best of both, no matter the gender, and are usually capable of modeling a sensibility of caring about learning.

Take Home Reading/Writing Activity Packets For Kindergartners, Jean Marie Czubin
Take Home Reading/Writing Activity Packets For Kindergartners, Jean Marie Czubin
All Graduate Projects
This project was developed to provide meaningful reading/writing activities which would involve the parents of kindergartners in the reading process. Research studies reviewed in literature supported the theory that kindergartners should be taught basic reading skills and parents need to be involved in the reading process. It is currently recognized that parents can do a great deal to develop reading and writing skills at home. Therefore, the role of the teacher is extended beyond the school into the home.

The results of the program showed that peer coaching can be utilized by teachers to assume greater leadership and responsibility in the area of instructional improvement.
