This descriptive study examined to what extent, if any, three school supports (instructional scheduling, teaming, and common planning) are in existence in New York State middle schools. For the purposes of this study, middle schools were defined as schools that contained the grade configurations of 5-8, 6-8, and 7-8. The sample surveyed was comprised of 232 New York State middle school principals in school districts with an average need/resource capacity. The purpose of this action research project was to measure how a daily Homebase program affects academic achievement and school climate at the middle school level. The participants were 8^th grade students in a suburban middle school, along with 10 full-time middle school teachers who gave specific feedback at the beginning and end of the research period. Data was collected using a survey given to all staff, grade comparisons from last year to this year, and pre-/post-assessment surveys given to participating students and staff. The research conducted focused on a revised homebase curriculum and the effects that it had on middle school students. A homebase curriculum focusing on relationship and team building was implemented with eighteen eighth-grade students. Data collection was focused on student attitude and demeanor towards school throughout the curriculum implementation process. Data sources included student feedback sheets, student attitude surveys, parent feedback sheets, student conferences, and teacher observation. Results from the data collection showed that having a meaningful and organized homebase curriculum can build upon relationships in homebase and improve student attitudes toward school. This study examined the relationship between word consciousness and vocabulary growth by analyzing the results from a local assessment, the Word Consciousness Assessment (WCA), as well as a standardized assessment, the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests. These data came from portions of a larger study, the Multifaceted Comprehensive Vocabulary Instructional Program for the Upper Elementary Grades, which relied on a formative design with no control group. The 142 fourth and fifth grade participants came from an elementary school located in the Midwest. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 specifically prohibits the discrimination of individuals with disabilities who participate in federally funded programs, including public education. Public education is a major recipient of federal funds and has struggled to apply the law to their practice. As the Office of Civil Rights (the administrator of Section 504) became more rigorous in enforcing this legislation, schools became more frustrated with the vagueness of the requirements and the eligibility standards. However, summer learning loss in reading is not shared by all subgroups of students. Students are likely to avoid academic pursuits if they lack academic self-efficacy (Bandura, 2000). Furthermore, past poor academic performance contributes to the development of low academic self-efficacy. Students who participate in extracurricular activities, like LA GEAR UP, demonstrate better academic achievement and less risk-taking behaviors than non-participating students (Barber, Stone, & Hunt, 2003).
