Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Knowledge And Application Of Response To Intervention, Carrie Dannelle Jepma

Response to Intervention (RTI) is a model for providing instructional and scientific-based interventions to all children who struggle. RTI uses data-based decision making for the interventions, instructional evaluation, intervention intensity and length of time, and evaluation and recommendations for any adjustments needed in instruction in both the problem-solving and standard protocol models. The difference between the two models of RTI is that the interventions are individualized for each student in the problem-solving model, but not the standard protocol model.

Response to Intervention (RTI) is a three-tiered program designed to deliver individualized intervention services early in a child's academic career. Prior to 2004, the education system had a "wait to fail" system in place for students. RTI is a model designed to change this by providing intervention before the child experiences academic failure. Formal education of master level genetic counseling trainees has occurred since the 1970s however, unlike other health care disciplines there has been no research conducted into their learning styles. Practice-based learning is widely utilized in the medical school setting however, it is unknown how extensive this teaching modality is used in the genetic counseling training programs. The prevalence of idioms in both spoken and written English makes learning to comprehend and produce them important for English language learners. It may be particularly important for preadolescent and adolescent learners to become proficient with idioms because of their need to fit in with peers and the frequency with which idioms occur in classroom communication and academic texts. Idioms pose difficulties for non-native speakers because of their nature as both formulaic and figurative language, their cultural specificity, and the fact that their figurative meaning cannot necessarily be determined from the literal meanings of the constituent words.

The purpose of this project was to provide high school teachers with training to increase their understanding of how research-based information can help them create classroom environments that nurture motivation in adolescents. Participating teachers completed a pre-test questionnaire to assess goal orientation, teacher efficacy, theory of intelligence, perceptions of the importance of knowledge regarding adolescent development, and autonomy-supportive attitudes and behaviors. Participants included 10 high school teachers from a suburban high school in Southern California.
