Graduate Student Independent Studies

There's a lot working against authentic demonstrations of thinking, and legitimate avenues of collaboration in our school cultures. We force-feed students high-stakes tests that promote a single "right answer" instead of multiple solution paths. Despite research that suggests teachers learn best from each other, we promote the ideal of the teacher-as-maverick. Many of our systems endorse closed-set, closed-door thinking that leaves room for neither independent student thinking nor the collaborative generation of ideas.

Breaking cultures this strong, this endemic, is a weighty task. In a yearlong case study, Alexis Goldberg creates and executes a professional development plan that engages with …

Training Professional School Counseling Students To Facilitate A Classroom Guidance Lesson And Strengthen Classroom Management Skills Using A Mixed Reality Environment, Tiphanie Gonzalez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to the ASCA National Model, school counselors are expected to deliver classroom guidance lessons; yet, there has been little emphasis on graduate coursework targeting the development and implementation of guidance curriculum lessons in PSC training. A national study conducted by Perusse, Goodnough and Noel (2001) was conducted looking at how counselor educators were training “entry level school counseling students” in the skills needed for them to be successful as PSCs. They found that of the 189 school counseling programs surveyed only 3% offered a guidance curriculum course and 13.2% offered a foundations in education course. Inferring that many of …

Theses Digitization Project

The focus of this research will revolve around these main questions: Are new teachers adequately prepared for their new teaching position, school culture, demographics, environment, and expectations? The new teacher retention rate is dramatically decreasing in California. Many new teachers leave the education field within the first five years of entering as teachers. Beginning teachers have many pressures guiding their entrance into the teaching field. The first five years are a "vulnerable time" for new teachers entering the field.
