Since the First World War, there has been an increased recognition for the need of physical education in the elementary school. Although educators recognize and agree on the need, they are not in agreement as to how to best achieve this need. Some educators believe that physical education should be taught as a specialized subject. Through this means, instruction is provided by a specialist who is trained in physical education. Some educators believe that physical education should be integrated with every other phase of the school program and taught by the classroom teacher. There are other educators who believe that …

One of the great problems facing the public schools of America today is that of providing adequate school facilities. The immediate need for new buildings is overwhelming. Contributing factors to the need for expanded school plant facilities can be classified, both as a result of a backlog of school building needs over a period of several decades, and because of greatly increased enrollments. A publication of the United States Office of Education summarized a discussion of these factors as follows:

The public schools entered the 1950 decade with a backlog of need for more than 250,000 classrooms and faced anticipated …

Each person in education from the Commissioner of Education down to the classroom teacher is concerned with administration. Each has administrative duties. The way these duties are conducted and carried out will have a direct influence on the outcome of any physical education program and each child within this program.

Through the Tenth Amendment responsibility for the administration of education has been turned over to the various states. Most of the states through their constitutions place the responsibility upon the legislature to provide for organization and maintenance of public school systems. This body then draws up the statutory laws and …

Opinions Of Secondary School Principals In Regard To The Intramural Activities Program In High Schools Of Utah, Thair G. Allen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Intramural activity programs, as employed in the modern American high school, represent a very recent and fast growing development. In early colonial days youth was necessarily absorbed in helping to build a new nation out of the wilderness. Clearing forests, building homes, and handling heavy chores were some of the tasks of which youths were an important part. They had little leisure time for play. In the modern age of today, with its frontiers established, students who are attending high school have ample leisure time for play. The direction of this play into wholesome avenues is the problem that faces …

Student Management Practices In The Secondary School Shops Of Utah, U. Sterling Cheney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Background

It is wrong to think that industrial education had its beginning recently. Merely because industry has made revolutionary changes and advancements during recent years does not mean that industrial education has not been in existence for a long time. Industrial education in some forms is probably as old as the human race.

In the development of industrial education it is interesting to note that both anciently and during modern times the emphasis has been placed on the value of handwork. The cave man's life depended upon his skill and ability to make and use the various types of primitive …

What The Industrial Arts Instructors Of The State Of Utah Consider A Sound Public Relations Program, Walter E. Ulrich Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Public relations is not a new term. It is, however, becoming more popular and necessary in the modern concept of school activities. Public relations pertains to the whole school system, but this study will deal only with public relations as it affects the industrial arts program of the school. Because industrial arts is a relatively new addition to the school curriculum, and because the par-pupil cost is generally higher than that for other subjects, the value of the program must be defended and publicized. One of the best ways to prevent the industrial arts program from being classified as a …

This research study and evaluation is based on educational philosophy that acknowledges the values of music education in the institutions of higher learning in the United States, also the place of instrumental music as a part of the music education program. There is, however, a feeling of controversy over the values and place of the football show band within the instrumental music program.

In the Rocky Mountain area, every college and university has a football show band. To many administrators and music educators, including band directors, it may seem that the importance of the show band has been exaggerated, and …

A Study To Determine The Content Of An Industrial Arts Program In The Elementary Schools Of Box Elder County, Charles M. Hawkes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The child is the reason for the school. He is the one for whom learning experiences are provided. Our understanding of the child as a growing individual and as a learner, his personality and his purposes and interests, supply the foundation for developing an effective educational program.

No longer do we look at the education program as a sole preparation for some future life. Instead it has now become more a process whereby we make the most of present living in order that we might live a more full and rich life each day. Education is something that goes on …

Determining The Extent, In Terms Of Behavior Growth To Which Industrial Arts Teachers In Utah Are Achieving The Objectives Of Industrial Arts, A. Kent Randall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is evident that, if industrial arts teachers have subscribed to a set of objectives to guide or give direction to their teaching program, they should be used. It is not sufficient to formulate the aims then lay them aside to collect dust. Rather these aims or objectives should be used effectively as a learning guide. Upon these objectives the teacher should build his whole program.

It has been said that objectives really mean behavioral growth on the part of the students. If such is the case, the objectives must be translated into a desired behavior pattern outcome. The student's …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is usually recognized that, in the broad sense, our public schools are maintained for the instruction of children and youth. Moreover, there appear to be three important factors which bear directly upon the nature of this instruction: (1) the individuals who enter the teaching profession, the kinds of people they are, their physical, emotional and mental characteristics or capacities; (2) the kind of education these potential educators receive in preparation for their professional work; and, (3) the actual teaching assignment the individual receives in the particular school where he is employed. Commonly, these three matters are referred to as …
