Social interventions for children with disabilities are generally conducted in small groups and outside of the classroom; therefore, little is known about inclusive and classwide social interventions in early childhood educational settings. This study evaluated the effects of inclusive social skills training (ISST), a program delivered remotely to inclusive preschool classrooms via direct instruction, video modeling, rehearsal, and feedback, to teach social skills. Educators rated preschoolers' social skills in a nonequivalent pretest-posttest design and evaluated the social validity of ISST. I examined the differences in scores. This dissertation examined co-rumination among married men and women and its effects on their marital quality and depressive outcomes. The study addressed the concept of co-rumination in the Pakistani family context as the notion of gender role affects many aspects of people’s lives in Pakistan including their self-disclosure. Data were collected online through social media from 150 married men and women who were in a marital relationship for at least a year. This interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) explored the experiences of Hispanic female counselors in rural New Mexico conceptualization and practice of self-care and wellness. The aim of the study was to understand the systemic, environmental, and cultural factors that reinforce and prevent resilience and wellness. Data consisted of two interviews: one structured hour-long demographic interview and one semi-structured hour-long interview related to the participant’s experience of identity, professional counseling, and self-care. Participants included 9 Hispanic women practicing professional counseling and living in various rural communities in New Mexico. Research questions included: 1) Do student cohorts (first-year, second-year, and third-year students) differ in their initial goal orientation? It is commonly reported that resistance training (RT) with slower-repetition tempos leads to greater metabolic stress because they increase the time under tension (TUT) during sets of exercise. However, little information is available on the effect of different repetition tempos on blood lactate concentration, muscle oxygenation, and heart rate (HR) when TUT and proximity to concentric muscular failure are matched during lower-body RT. This study compared 11 noun modifiers, adopted from Biber et al.’s (2011) index, in the writing of English native speakers (NS) and non-native speakers (NNS) graduate students in Education field and compare them with the frequencies found in published writings. Also, it investigated how the language background influences NP complexity in academic writing. The findings showed compared to the expert writers, the student writers used different amounts of phrasal modifiers in their dissertations (e.g., premodifying nouns). Using creative autoethnographic testimonio (CAT), a story is told about the injustices within the learning environment and work environment of higher education toward a person with disabilities: sleep apnea, learning disabilities, negative mental health. The author explores the health difficulties of addressing sleep deprivation while attending graduate school and working full-time as a professional. With sleep apnea impacting his health, his mental health declines. As his health declines, there is an increase in discrimination, hostility, oppression, bullying, and toxic masculinity. Purpose: To examine the effect of high intensity interval work (HIIW) and moderate intensity continuous work (MICW) patterns on markers of acute kidney injury (AKI) and kidney damage in a hot environment. Methods: Nine males completed two hours of physical work in a hot environment, performing either HIIW [2 minutes at 80% maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) and 3 minutes at 30% VO2max] or MICW. This dissertation brings together three qualitative research articles to interrogate a disjuncture between curriculum development in graduate schools of education and the relations of power it fosters in teacher education and counselor education. In applying biopower and intersectional analyses throughout each article, this dissertation contends that the recognition of power relations within these fields helps to highlight hegemonic patterns of teaching and counseling that occur in settings of classrooms and sessions. Three themes emerged within this dissertation: resistance, community, and subjectivity. Teacher washout can disrupt teacher effectiveness and undermine the espoused pedagogy in teacher education programs. Teacher washout occurs once an individual occupies a teaching role after formal training but corresponds with the potency of teacher education programs and K-12 experiences. Teacher washout literature is limited and does not address the socialization process of formal training. The following two hybrid dissertation studies examine washout, wash-in, and never washed-in. The aim of this study was to help men convicted of child sexual offenses learn to recognize and engage their character strengths over 12 months. Participants were six men convicted of contact and noncontact (internet) child sexual offenses. All participants were members of a community-based reintegration group for registered citizens. In the first weeks of the study, participants received the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths survey. The survey, containing 240 questions—10 items for each of the 24 character strengths outlined—helped participants identify their top character strengths. The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) practitioners and the role that failure plays in their sport. Four male BJJ practitioners, three of which had obtained the rank of black belt and one purple belt participated in the study. Guided by Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (Smith et al., 2009), three semi-repeated interviews and a singular journal entry were completed with each participant. This study aims to fill a gap in the literature by describing how community-based adaptive sports and fitness facilities are built in communities in the United States. It was previously hypothesized that endurance exercise training blunts the hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) response to acute exercise. We investigated whether training status influences the skeletal muscle HIF-1 response to acute exercise. 7 endurance athletes and 8 untrained controls performed a bout of cycling exercise. Skeletal muscle protein levels of HIF-1α and its inhibitors, prolyl hydroxylase 2 (PHD2), factor inhibiting HIF (FIH) and von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) were measured pre, post and 3h post-exercise. HIF-1 target gene expression was assessed via rtPCR and RNA-sequencing. Baseline protein levels of FIH and PHD2 were greater in the trained group. The exercise-induced increase …

Middle-distance running is an interesting domain in which to study sex differences in athletic performance because of the varied metabolic, mechanical and tactical demands. The Anaerobic Speed Reserve (ASR) represents the difference between an athlete’s maximal sprint speed (MSS) and maximal aerobic speed (MAS). The ASR and MSS are key determinants of elite male 800m performance (Sandford et al., 2018); however, the role of the ASR in female middle-distance running is unclear, considering sex differences in physiology, mechanics and competition factors. Decades of sexual health interventions have focused on the disparities youth of color face; however, inequalities in health outcomes and resources remain. This study evaluated Project C.O.P.E. (Communities Organizing for Prevention and Empowerment), a sexual health intervention in an under-resourced northeastern urban community. The goal of the study was to determine if the intervention, personal domains (ethnic identity and family support), or sexual health domains (Viral Hepatitis [VH] knowledge and human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] knowledge) had an impact on sexual negotiation skills in Black and Hispanic adolescent participants (n =510; Mage =16.78 ± 1.14). The Bluff River Trail (BRT) is a future 10+ mile trail along the San Juan River corridor in the 4-Corners region of the Southwestern United States. By asking, what is the land ethic of the Bluff Community? this qualitative study identifies behaviors and beliefs, or land ethics, between seven Bluff residents and the San Juan River corridor. A land ethic contributes to the social re/production of space; therefore, third space theory contextualizes intersecting and contradicting spatialities evidenced in data. Considering the consistent healthcare system load demands, nursing shortages persist, especially in remote areas of the United States. It is vital that students interested in attending nursing school and working in their home communities have expanded nursing program access and supports in order to supply the necessary nursing workforce in remote areas. Lack of diversity in the nursing profession weakens healthcare delivery. Native Americans are underrepresented as nursing students and employed nurses. Measures to provide a more diverse workforce should concentrate on recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented minority nursing students.
