A growing number of individuals have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Students with autism spectrum disorder may exhibit a variety of physically aggressive and self-injurious behaviors that are problematic and difficult for caregivers and educators to manage. Due to these behaviors, educators and caregivers are facing burnout and exhaustion. The research shows that there are interventions that can help identify the function of the behaviors and are effective in reducing the physical aggression or self-injurious behaviors. The review examines the use of Alternative and Augmentative Communication with student who have Autism Spectrum Disorders, the use of an AAC device, and reducing aggressive behaviors as it relates to use of AAC. In Chapter I, an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder, AAC, and SGD was discussed. Three issues guided this review. First, factors that increase the incidence of gender dysphoria among DHRC is examined. Second, the change in the generational view of gender identity will be reviewed and contrasted. Finally, school and community-based programs will be reviewed. Issues related to gender dysphoria among the population diagnosed with ASD is a specific focus. By identifying and defining Gender Identity, educators will be more equipped to support all students and create a gender inclusive classroom.

Behavioral interventions are positive and proactive strategies to help students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) gain behavior management skills. Behavior affects how students succeed in the classroom both academically and behaviorally. This review examines the positive effects of behavioral interventions for aggressive behaviors in students with ASD. Research states that physical aggression is more prevalent in individuals with ASD compared to any other developmental disabilities or typically developing peers.

The attention toward the mathematics achievement of U.S. students in general education, when they took the national and international assessments, has risen (Przychodzin et al., 2004). However, a limited amount of research focusing on effective mathematics instruction was completed (Baker, Gersten, & Lee, 2002).

Eleven studies published between 2011 and 2017 were examined and chosen for inclusion in the Chapter 2 literature review. Studies were chosen if they evaluated the effectiveness of a specific intervention treatment used to reduce behaviors associated with anxiety in students diagnosed with ASD. Studies evaluating effectiveness of medication treatments were not included in the review. Lastly, studies were not limited to the United States, however, most studies were domestic in nature.

The high prevalence rate of individuals with autism who display self-injurious behaviors, coupled with the growing number of youth with an autism diagnosis, has created a need for an expanded array of assistive options. This starred paper examines, through literature review, the effectiveness of interventions on self-injurious behaviors in individuals with autism. Behavior, and non-behavior, based interventions are considered from domestic and international sources. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder featured by impaired social skills, communication abilities, restricted activities and repetitive behavior (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Among the individuals with autism, it is approximately estimated that 10% have autistic savant skills. The most common domains of savant skill are musical, numeracy, and artistic savant skill.
