Cultural Commons In Non-Traditional And Traditional Secondary Education: A Media Ecology Approach, Anthony Baerga
Theses & Dissertations
Based on the theory of media ecology, this study explores the cultural commons between traditional and non-traditional education in secondary schools. Postman's study of media ecology presents the notion that media technology plays an integral part in society and cannot be overlooked; more so, technologies should be used as an ecological learning tool to balance education systems (Postman 1992). Within the past four years, U.S. education witnessed over 100,000 students leave the traditional classroom to embark on a virtual education journey (Miron, Horvitz, and Gulosino, 2013). The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine how teachers create a media …
Teachers' Perception Of The English Language Curriculum In Libyan Public Schools: An Investigation And Assessment Of Implementation Process Of English Curriculum In Libyan Public High Schools, Salem Altaieb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the advent of globalization and technological development, English has become a necessary tool of international communication in many areas such as education, business, politics, commerce, science, and technology throughout the world. Also, English has become the most widely taught foreign language in the world (Kachru &Nelson, 1996). Moreover, the issue of successful implementation of the English language curriculum has been the focus of a number of studies. In the case of Libya, however, little research has been conducted on teachers' perceptions of the new English language curriculum in Libyan high schools. Thus, teachers' voices have not been examined or …

A Consensual Qualitative Research Study Of The Transformation From High School Dropout To Second Chance Alumni, Jayne E. Smith
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
This study focused on understanding the perceived process of change, outcomes and influencing factors experienced by high school graduates of Urban Corps of San Diego County (UCO) from a bioecological theory of human development standpoint. UCO is a second chance high school diploma-job training program that offers students free mental health counseling and employment assistance. Limited research charted former high school dropouts' process of re-engagement with school and experiences after graduation. Using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) and Critical Theory, a research team identified nine categories and 33 subcategories based on 15 semi-structured interviews with a homogenous sample of UCO alumni. …

Factors Affecting The Retention Of First-Career And Second-Career Science Teachers In Urban High Schools, Rosemary C. Rak
Factors Affecting The Retention Of First-Career And Second-Career Science Teachers In Urban High Schools, Rosemary C. Rak
Educational Studies Dissertations
The turnover of high school science teachers is an especially troubling problem in urban schools with economically disadvantaged students. Because high teacher turnover rates impede effective instruction, the persistence of teacher attrition is a serious concern. Using an online survey and interviews in a sequential mixed-methods approach, this study investigates the perceptions of high school science teachers regarding factors that contribute to their employment decisions. The study also compares first-career and second-career science teachers' perceptions of retention and attrition factors and identifies conditions that urban school leaders can establish to support the retention of their science teachers. A purposeful sample …

Art Therapy For Enhancing Academic Experience Of Male High School Freshmen, Kelvin Antonio Ramirez
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of group art therapy interventions in improving social and emotional issues for male high school freshmen. The Behavioral Assessment System for Children Second Edition (BASC-2) was used to measure academically tracked high school freshman (n = 80) receiving the 12 week intervention in a group setting in comparison to an academically matched control group (n=76). Independent sample t-tests compared participants in the Honor, Average and At Risk Tracks who received art therapy versus participants who did not. Resilience Through Adversity: A Narrative Case Study Of Students' Experiences Of Expulsion From School, Nadia Coleman Krivenkov
Resilience Through Adversity: A Narrative Case Study Of Students' Experiences Of Expulsion From School, Nadia Coleman Krivenkov
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Expulsion from school is life changing. This single event can alter the trajectory of a student's life--for better or for worse. How life changes is unique for each individual student. Risk and protective factors that impact an individual student's resilience determine the level of positive or negative outcomes experienced as a result of expulsion. Educators have the opportunity to take advantage of this disruption in students' education to improve the trajectory of students' lives. However, without thoughtful intervention from caring educators, this interruption in students' education may have an irreparable destructive impact on students' future.
The purpose of this study …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
This is a qualitative case study designed to examine the viewpoints community members have about the after-school Health Sciences Technology Academy (HSTA) pipeline program for students in grades nine through twelve. There is little existing literature that examines community impact from the outside or gives voice to community members.
Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA) has been in existence for 19 years in 26 of the 55 counties in West Virginia. It requires a …
Everything In Di Dark Muss Come To Light: A Postcolonial Investigation Of The Practice Of Extra Lessons At The Secondary Level In Jamaica's Education System, Saran Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the vast research examining the evolution of Caribbean education systems, little is chronologically tied to the postcolonial theoretical perspectives of specific island-state systems, such as the Jamaican education system and its relationship with the underground shadow education system. This dissertation study sought to address the gaps in the literature by critically positioning postcolonial theories in education to examine the macro- and micro-level impacts of extra lessons on secondary education in Jamaica. The following postcolonial theoretical (PCT) tenets in education were contextualized from a review of the literature: (a) PCT in education uses colonial discourse analysis to critically deconstruct and …
