A Thematic Unit For Integrating Social Studies And Science In The First Grade, Lin Marjorie Lasater Jan 1992

A Thematic Unit For Integrating Social Studies And Science In The First Grade, Lin Marjorie Lasater

All Graduate Projects

A thematic unit for integrating social studies and science with other curriculum areas was developed for first grade students. The theme for the unit centered around farms. The unit was divided into five subunits: farms, farm animals, orchards/vineyards (to include fruits of the Yakima Valley and apples), crops (to include vegetables of the Yakima Valley, pumpkins, and wheat), and nutrition/four food groups. The literature was reviewed to establish a theoretical foundation for the unit and for activities that focused on reading, writing, and language development.

Thematic Approach To Teaching Science In Kindergarten For Use With First And Second Language Students, Gerene Marie Sadberry Jan 1992

Thematic Approach To Teaching Science In Kindergarten For Use With First And Second Language Students, Gerene Marie Sadberry

All Graduate Projects

Thematic Science units were established for the Wapato kindergarten in both Spanish and English. Approximately three hundred students are participants in the program for which this curriculum was designed. This study suggests how selected science objectives may be implemented using the thematic approach. Each theme contains a media resource list of Items available from the Wapato Primary Media Center and suggested activities which will help to integrate the science unit with other subject areas. The Intent of the curriculum design ls that children learn language and science naturally when they are developed in a meaningful context.

The Meyersville School's Utilization Of Windows On Science, Art D. Anthony Jan 1992

The Meyersville School's Utilization Of Windows On Science, Art D. Anthony

Masters Theses

This study was designed to determine if the students and teachers of Meyersville School, Meyersville, Texas, liked the Windows on Science® program better than learning and teaching science using the traditional book. All students, grades three through six, and teachers, grades one through six, were surveyed regarding their opinion of Windows on Science®.

This field experience indicated the students and teachers liked the Windows on Science® program better than using standard science textbooks. The male students had a higher mean score than the female students or teachers. The teachers felt they needed more experiments to help …

The Organizational Culture Of The Academic Department: A Case Study Of A Department Of Biological Sciences, Martha Anne Smith Jan 1992

The Organizational Culture Of The Academic Department: A Case Study Of A Department Of Biological Sciences, Martha Anne Smith

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine theories of organizational culture typically applied to the university level of organization and their applicability to the academic department. Chaffee and Tierney's (1988) theory of organizational culture, dimensions of culture, and leadership strategies became the basis for a qualitative case study of a Department of Biological Sciences in a metropolitan university.;Interviews of current faculty members, current and former deans, and other administrators were conducted. Observations were made of faculty meetings and retreats and of departmental governance committee meetings. Extensive review of documents and correspondence covering more that twenty years provided additional data.;Interview …

Inquiry Based Mental Mathematics Versus Traditional On The Performance And Attitudes Of Year Four Children, Anita Jurat Jan 1992

Inquiry Based Mental Mathematics Versus Traditional On The Performance And Attitudes Of Year Four Children, Anita Jurat

Theses : Honours

This study Investigated the effect of Inquiry based mental mathematics compared to traditional mental mathematics, with respect to the performance and attitudes of a sample of year four children. Using a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design, and applying a t test for non-Independent samples, It was found that after an eight week period, the Inquiry based mental mathematics group achieved significantly higher scores on a mental mathematics test, and showed a more Improved attitude toward mental mathematics than the traditional group. Qualitative analyses of attempts to create calculations to make a given number, revealed that the Inquiry based group had …

Learning Mathematics As A Language, Kathryn Shafer Jan 1992

Learning Mathematics As A Language, Kathryn Shafer

Masters Theses

This paper explores the relationship between language and mathematics. It is a summary of research done over the last thirty years. Also included are personal observations which are not part of any controlled study. Since language is the vehicle for thought, mathematics educators and curriculum planners will benefit from a linguistic approach to mathematics education. Symbolic mathematics is similar to natural language in both its structure and its communicative nature. If the students are to internalize the notation, they must be the ones to give it meaning. A linguistic approach to mathematics education includes language development, verbalization of concepts, vocabulary …

Sex-Related Differences In Autonomous Learning Behaviours And Mathematics Achievement, Laura Beahan Jan 1992

Sex-Related Differences In Autonomous Learning Behaviours And Mathematics Achievement, Laura Beahan

Theses : Honours

The autonomous learning behaviour model proposed by Fennema and Peterson (1985a, 1985b) hypothesises that sex- related differences in mathematics are a result of sex-related differences in autonomous learning behaviours. Autonomous learning behaviours include choosing to engage in high-level tasks, preferring to work independently on such tasks and persisting at them. The purpose of this study was to investigate sex-related differences in autonomous learning behaviours and to determine any relationship between the presence of these behaviours and achievement in mathematics. Twelve students studying the Year 1 unit "Foundations of Mathematics" were selected for the study, including two males and two females …
