The Effects Of Physical Education On Social Outcomes In Children With Disabilities: A Meta-Analysis, Alyette J. Afont Jan 2023

The Effects Of Physical Education On Social Outcomes In Children With Disabilities: A Meta-Analysis, Alyette J. Afont

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Social outcomes are the foundation of human relationships and many children with disabilities may display deficits in the necessary behaviors to form those connections. Previous literature shows that physical activity can be an effective intervention for children with disabilities to promote social outcomes through the three domains of learning – cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to collect, index, and evaluate the available literature exploring how a physical education program can impact social outcomes in children with disabilities. By composing articles pertaining to social outcomes and physical education through multiple databases, researchers will be able to …

Increasing The Duration Of Treadmill Walking To Reach Moderate Intensity Levels For 2 Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Nicholas Velazquez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study aims to increase the duration of treadmill walking to reach moderate intensity levels for 2 students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researcher incorporated a token-economy board that was used to indicate total time walking and walking goals. A single case changing-criterion design was used in this study and consisted of a baseline, multiple sub-criteria intervention phase, and a follow-up phase. Results showed that there was a positive relationship between the intervention and the total walking time for each participant. Each participant met the criterion for each phase, eventually leading to meeting their overall goal for the study. …

Impact Of Self Determination Theory Amongst Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Physical Activity: Modifying A Survey, Ruben Guillermo Diaz Jan 2023

Impact Of Self Determination Theory Amongst Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Physical Activity: Modifying A Survey, Ruben Guillermo Diaz

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Prior research has expressed concern for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who may be at risk regarding exercise and physical activity due to lack of interest, delays in motor skill development, and/or social impairment. Self Determination theory (SDT) has been suggested as an effective approach for supporting individuals with ASD across a variety of domains. SDT expresses that with the satisfaction of three fundamental psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness), higher levels of intrinsic motivation will develop which will lead to enhanced development and well-being. While SDT is an effective approach to promoting motivation, it has been suggested that …

Self-Determination Theory And Exercise Performance For Individuals With Autism., Martin Calderon Jan 2023

Self-Determination Theory And Exercise Performance For Individuals With Autism., Martin Calderon

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) tend to demonstrate low levels of physical activity and exercise when compared to their developing peers. Low physical activity levels are associated with multiple factors, including lack of understanding of how to perform exercise movements and low intrinsic motivation. Token economy reward systems have shown to be practical in behavior analysis for changing behaviors however, there is limited research on the effects of token economy reward systems in an exercise setting. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of a token economy board combined with self-determination theory (SDT) on the exercise …

A Guidebook For Adapted Physical Educators: Connecting The Domains Of Learning To Evidence-Based Practices, Kalyn G. Ruland Jan 2022

A Guidebook For Adapted Physical Educators: Connecting The Domains Of Learning To Evidence-Based Practices, Kalyn G. Ruland

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

I created a guidebook for Adapted Physical Educators (APE) as a resource on how they can use Evidence-Based Practices (EBP's) created by The National Professional Development Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder (NPDC on ASD) to meet the Domains of Learning. The goal for this guidebook was to help bridge the gap between educational research and practice in the classroom. EBP’s are a form of research based interventions that are made easily accessible for busy educators. The main audience for the guidebook is Adapted Physical Education Teachers, with a secondary audience of Special Education and general education teachers. This guidebook was …

Integrated Curriculum In Physical Education, Delaney M. Rice Jan 2021

Integrated Curriculum In Physical Education, Delaney M. Rice

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This paper seeks to address an absence of resources for teachers that highlight cross-curricular integration of physical education and core academics to benefit the learning, motivation, health, and academic outcomes of students. Curricular integration, or the highlighting of overlapping themes between subjects, has become a popular way to maximize educational time in schools. The benefits of curricular integration are well documented, however, less known are the benefits of curricular integration in the fields of physical education and special education. By analyzing existing literature, reviewing existing curricula and educational resources, and surveying educational professionals, a guide was created to support teachers …

Is Inclusion The Answer?, Jacqueline M. Hewins Jan 2020

Is Inclusion The Answer?, Jacqueline M. Hewins

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Inclusion is the method by which many school districts meet the requirement of educating students with disabilities in the “least restrictive environment”. While it is an established practice, supported by the educational community and most families alike, there is a gap in the literature regarding how students feel about being in inclusion classes. In order to learn more about the student experience, five students with special education needs from a rural high school were interviewed about their involvement in inclusion. Students were asked about whether they felt included, if they socialized with peers from the inclusion class, and if they …

Parent Attitudes Towards Inclusion In Physical Education, Sarah Astrid Crye Jan 2019

Parent Attitudes Towards Inclusion In Physical Education, Sarah Astrid Crye

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

BACKGROUND: More schools are moving towards full inclusion for students with disabilities into physical education classes. One key facilitating factor in the success of inclusion is parental support and involvement. Although much research has been conducted on the attitudes of teachers and students towards inclusion in physical education classes, there is very little information regarding parent attitudes towards inclusion in a physical education setting.

PURPOSE: To examine parent attitudes towards inclusion in physical education.

METHODS: Online anonymous surveys were administered to parents of students with and without disabilities enrolled in a high school in rural northern California. Survey questions gathered …

The Impact Of Peer Tutoring Program On Basketball Skills For Children With A Disability, Matt Mark Kaufman Jan 2018

The Impact Of Peer Tutoring Program On Basketball Skills For Children With A Disability, Matt Mark Kaufman

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this study was to review evidence-based practices for implementation of peer tutoring programs in general physical education classroom. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2004 emphasized placing students with disabilities in general education settings (U.S. Department of Education, 2005). Including students with disabilities in general physical education classes may cause challenges not only for the students, but also for the teachers who are often not properly prepared to adapt to students that have various disabilities. Students with disabilities are often behind in their motor development, and because of that, they may benefit from additional instructional adaptations. …

Current Balance Levels In Deaf And Hearing Impaired Children, Megan E. Wink Jan 2018

Current Balance Levels In Deaf And Hearing Impaired Children, Megan E. Wink

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this systematic review of literature is to evaluate the current balance levels in deaf and hearing-impaired children. Children with hearing impairments show balance and motor deficits mainly due to damaged or undeveloped areas of the vestibular system. The auditory sense plays a dynamic role in producing functional movements and motor coordination skills. Researchers founded that motor development skills are especially important to Deaf children because better skills lead to participation in Deaf sports as well as increased opportunities for social interaction. For children born or diagnosed as deaf or hearing-impaired, there is still the opportunity to keeping …

Evidence-Based Assessment In Adapted Physical Education On Psychomotor Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis, Sam R. Diskin Jan 2017

Evidence-Based Assessment In Adapted Physical Education On Psychomotor Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis, Sam R. Diskin

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

There is little data to show evidence-based practices in adapted physical education and whether it is working or not. There is a lack of information currently on the frequency that assessments are being done, on the disabilities that are being assessed or should be assessed with each test, and on the uses of the assessments that are being done. The aim of this paper is to assess and synthesize all evidence-based practices on psychomotor outcomes in adapted physical education using a meta-analysis. Data was sourced from computerized searches using the following databases: SPORT Discus, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Pub Med (Medline), Cochrane …

Peer Tutoring In Physical Education: A Review Of Evidence-Based Practices, Kanica Yiep Jan 2016

Peer Tutoring In Physical Education: A Review Of Evidence-Based Practices, Kanica Yiep

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Including students with disabilities in physical education may cause many challenges such as having teachers who are not properly trained to include students with various disabilities. The active nature of the environment and needs of students with disabilities may require extra assistance in addition to having a physical education teacher. Although there are many challenges to include students with disabilities into a general physical education class research demonstrates inclusion is beneficial for students with and without disabilities. The purpose of this paper is to review research on peer tutoring in physical education and to discuss evidence-based practices for implementation of …
