This report is a description of the creation and workings of an Open Corridor ESL Workshop designed as a supplement to an intensive ESL program. The workshop's form is based on the beliefs that learners learn in different ways, have different needs and interests which should be reflected in the content of activities, and can take the responsibility for their learning. An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of this workshop and recommendations for improvement and use in different situations are presented in the final section.

This project concerns itself with the Problems of English Teaching in Africa and suggestions toward improvement.

The writer, after three years' experience in American public schools, universities, and other educational programs, has come to realize that there is much to be done to improve teacher training methods and techniques in the teacher training colleges and in-service training of teachers in Africa. Workshop programs with new and developing materials of teaching and techniques are recommended as one solution to these deficiencies.

In this paper I investigate the claims on which many present ESL methods are based and examine them in view of recent developments in both learning theory and linguistics. There are reasons to think that the audio-lingual method is grounded in inadequate theories of learning and linguistics; if so, this warrants experiments in new methods and re-examination of such currently acceptable teaching methods as repetition, imitation, and pattern practice. A Teacher's Pronunciation Manual is a compilation of various techniques, games and technical information to aid the teacher in his work on pronunciation in the classroom. There are several methods for minimal pair drills, sample tongue twisters, diagnostic pronunciation tests and advice on making pronunciation tapes. The following paper is a report describing a TEFL teacher training program taught to the International Career Training students at the School for International Training, Brattleboro, Vermont. It includes : a two-week detailed lesson plan of classroom activities for module participants, a description of their practice-teaching with sample lesson plans and evaluations, participants' evaluations of the course, suggestions for improvement of future modules, and administrative details involved in setting up a course of this type on the SIT campus.
