The School of Performing Arts submitted this proposal in September, but we need to resubmit the request because the guest conductor became unavailable. This is the exact same proposal, with two exceptions: substituting the original guest conductor (Tony Maiello) with a different conductor (Denton Stokes), and we are requesting a total of $ 1,000 rather than $2,000. Mr. Stokes, although well-noted (bio is on following page), does not have the same national ranking as did Mr. Maiello.

The Department of Philosophy is seeking funding support from the Cultural Affairs/Distinguished Lecture Series Fund for its 2009-2010 Philosophy Colloquium Series. This series of public talks will provide the opportunity for students, faculty, and community members both within and beyond the Department of Philosophy to hear and discuss stimulating lectures on a wide range of topics that are relevant both to the core themes of the department's philosophy curriculum as well as to current issues of ethical, political, social, and philosophic import. Some of the events enable collaboration and communication with other units on the campus and in the community.

Each spring since 2002, the Honors College at the University of Maine has endeavored to host a distinguished graduate for a several day visit. The visit typically includes in- and out-of-class conversations with Honors students as well as other students and faculty connected to our guest. The Distinguished Honors Graduate Lecture is highlighted campus-wide and in many years it was also the keynote address for the University's Student Research and Creative Achievement'Week. Between 2002 and 2008, this initiative was sponsored by TIAA-CREF.

The Bird.s by Aristophanes was written in 414 B.C. and has remained a classic Greek comedy that is widely produced in classic theatres and university campuses. The plot surrounds Euelpides and Pisthetærus, two old Athenians, disgusted with the litigiousness, wrangling and sycophancy of their countrymen, and how they resolve to form a new society. As the action progresses, the two Athenians go to Cloud Cukooland to seek the help of the Hoopoe, King of the Birds, as well as the rest of the birds, in their attempt to build a new city. The fall Series is projected to comprise eight CA/DlS-supported events featuring six poets and two fiction writers whose work covers a wide spectrum of contemporary literary practice. As you will see from the capsule biographies of all eight writers that are appended to this letter, this is a stellar line-up, including a MacArthur grant recipient (George Saunders), many nationally known poets from a diverse range of backgrounds and with a wide range of interests (art criticism, Darwin, Melville...) and several writers who quite simply deserve to be better known.

The dance program has evolved from a works-in-progress presentation in Minsky Recital Hall in the Fall and a dance concert at Hauck Auditorium in the Spring to two full-fledged Hauck shows per year, plus four Emerging Dance Works showcases. With a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, Høír opened on Broadway in 1968 and forever contributed to the growth of the "Rock'o musical genre. Corbett Hall as part of the Schonberger Peace and Social Justice Memorial Lecture Seriès. Eisenberg will also present a luncheon talk for the Socialist and Marxist Studies Series on October 22 on 'When Scholarship and Activism Collide: Nixon, Kissinger, and the Question of Needless Wars." Both talks will address the historical roots of significant contemporary U.S. foreign policy problems.

The first International Dance Festival was held in 2005 at Minsky Hall and was sponsored by the Office of International Programs, Multicultural Programs, Student Heritage Alliance Center and the intemational student groups across campus. We are inviting to the University of Maine a third generation Franco-American fiddler, Donna Hébert, who has received numerous honors and awards for her Franco-American music, including the Massachusetts Cultural Council 2008 Artists' Fellowship in the Folk Arts. Hébert will be accompanied by, Max Cohen, a folk guitarist, as well as Lionel Ducas, Eddie Michaud, and Germaine Cormier, playing the accordion, spoons, and piano.
