Getting Our Priorities Straight In Higher Education, John J. Petillo

SHU Faculty Publications

Higher education is not just about the schools. It is about the individuals and what society needs to flourish, prosper and grow.

We’ve entered a new and perilous era when the schools that try to inspire students to a higher calling will be penalized by federal aid distribution. The government’s formula discounts the personal development of the individual and the need for social consciousness.

Moocs And Modern Democracies, Richard L. Pate Nov 2013

Moocs And Modern Democracies, Richard L. Pate

WCBT Faculty Publications

A discussion of the imposition of the interests of the few on the collective through a subtle but effective manner: the eventual, complete development of Massive Open Online Courses. It is this article’s premise that this development together with current marketing efficacy and the present economic goals of modern democracies, is probable to result in a shrinkage of the market place of ideas and, paradoxically, likely to result in a diminution of democracy in the world.

Want To Enroll In A Mooc? No Thanks, My Professors Have Their Own Videos, Enda Mcgovern, Arne Baruca

WCBT Faculty Publications

Purpose: The paper explores how professors, in adopting short digital video lectures as a complementary teaching platform outside the classroom, could better enhance the learning experience for digital natives, i.e. millennial students, in challenging the growth of massive open online courses (MOOC). Method / Design and Sample: Students were required to view class-specific digital videos on YouTube and thereafter complete a questionnaire to examine …

1963, Michael W. Higgins

SHU Library Archives

On September 23 2013, as part of Sacred Heart University’s commemoration of its 50th anniversary, Michael W. Higgins provided insight into the University’s beginnings and its promising future. Higgins is SHU’s vice president for Mission and Catholic Identity. Professor Higgins' presentation coincided with the publication of the booklet "1963."

The year 1963 was a time of international tensions, major social and political turbulence, and the early years of the Second Vatican Council. Great changes were taking place around the world, inspiring Bishop Walter W. Curtis of Bridgeport to create a university in which laity would assume leadership.
