Strength In Supervision: A Professional Development Model For Student Affairs Graduate-Professionals, Stephen Babb Apr 2019

Strength In Supervision: A Professional Development Model For Student Affairs Graduate-Professionals, Stephen Babb

Stephen Babb

Student affairs practice is guided by the direction of its professional associations to establish standards for curriculum, strategies, and competencies. A graduate preparation program is an essential step in the educational and experiential journey of a student affairs professional and fulfilling a graduate-professional position during the program is a valuable paraprofessional experience. Published research on student affairs graduate-professionals observes a high attrition rate of new entry-level professionals in the field and identifies a series of consistent competencies and responsibilities expected of new entry-level student affairs professionals, but does not establish a professional development model to address those specific to new …

Engaging Students With Disabilities, Kirsten R. Brown, Ellen Broido Dec 2014

Engaging Students With Disabilities, Kirsten R. Brown, Ellen Broido

Kirsten R. Brown, Ph.D.

Students with disabilities are a rapidly growing, yet historically underrepresented population in postsecondary education. Historically underrepresented groups share a common experience: all faced unwelcoming environments when initially entering higher education (Hall & Belch, 2000). Ableism (the oppression of people with disabilities) plays a powerful role in shaping the way student with and without disabilities experience the educational environments, because “[b]y assuming one normative way to do things (move, speak, learn, and so forth), society privileges those who carry out these functions as prescribed and oppresses those who use other methods” (Evans, Forney, Guido, Patton & Renn, 2010, p. 242). Turning Data Into Insight: A Data Driven Retention Model, Oscar T. Mcknight, Wenhui Jin

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

This poster session addresses how to turn data into insight; that is, when attempting to increasing college retention rates by Student Affairs assessment and intervention. The presentation emphasizes a four part strategy and culminates in demonstrating how to construct a predictive chart or a multivariate computer program; with an overview of both simple and multiple regression models. The ultimate goal is to design interventions that will upset the prediction model and increase student retention.

“Teaching While Black”: Narratives Of African American Student Affairs Faculty, Lori Patton, Christopher Catching Dec 2008

“Teaching While Black”: Narratives Of African American Student Affairs Faculty, Lori Patton, Christopher Catching

Lori Patton Davis

African American faculty have historically been underrepresented within predominantly white institutions (PWIs) and deal with academic isolation, marginalization of their scholarship, and racial hostility. Little is known about the experiences of African American faculty who teach in student affairs graduate programs. The purpose of this study was to focus on their experiences through examination and utilization of their personal counter-narratives. This manuscript highlights the racial profiling that often shapes their experiences. We employ a qualitative critical race analysis that utilizes counterstorytelling as method to elucidate the experiences of the 13 African American faculty participants in our study.
