In this session seven NEA winners discuss keeping magic in their teaching practice. Having moved from “new” to mid-career, the session addresses two questions: (1) what is the current career challenge you face? and (2) what attitudes, behaviors, or practices allow you to keep the magic (stay energized) in your career? This study provides a broad overview of perceptions elementary school teachers hold regarding creativity, the strategies those teachers use to foster creative thinking and behaviour in their students, and the environmental challenges and opportunities they navigate when striving to develop 21st century skills in students. Earlier research examining teachers’ perceptions and creativity-fostering behaviours have typically asked teachers to describe their classroom practices, or self-report their perceptions regarding creative children or children’s creative actions. Using a mixed-methods approach, in this study 22 Grade 5-7 teachers working in Ontario completed an online questionnaire which measured their creativity-fostering behaviours. Creativity is the driver of innovations and advancement in any human society. Educational institutions have a major role to play in fostering creativity in their students by creating environment that is challenging and supportive for the teachers and the students. This work, using a survey design, identifies and assesses the level of climate for creativity in the secondary schools in Awka South Local Government of Anambra State.
