Personal Values Of Principals And Their Manifestation In Student Behaviour : A District-Level Study In Pakistan, Christopher Branson, Sharifullah Baig, Abida Begum Dec 2017

Personal Values Of Principals And Their Manifestation In Student Behaviour : A District-Level Study In Pakistan, Christopher Branson, Sharifullah Baig, Abida Begum

Sharifullah Baig

Although there is growing research evidence to support the view that the leadership practice of the school principal is the second-most important influence on student learning behind classroom teaching, there is no clarity about what, exactly, the principal is meant to do to ensure this outcome. Hence, Leithwood et al. (2010) propose that one of the principal’s important influences on student learning is the ‘rational’ path, which includes the issue of school-wide disciplinary climate. This argues that the principal plays a pivotal role in establishing the school-wide disciplinary climate that aids student learning. This article reports upon research conducted in …

What Does It Mean To Follow? An Exploration Of A Followership Profile In Hospitality And Tourism, Cynthia S. Deale, Donald G. Schoffstall, Eric Adam Brown Dec 2017

What Does It Mean To Follow? An Exploration Of A Followership Profile In Hospitality And Tourism, Cynthia S. Deale, Donald G. Schoffstall, Eric Adam Brown

Eric A. Brown

Although leadership has received considerable attention from many scholars, much less research has focused on those who follow leaders; yet, followers contribute much to the success of an organization. This study explored the followership profiles of stakeholders in hospitality and tourism education. The findings summarize the followership dimensions of a sample of hospitality students, educators, and industry professionals. For each of the five followership dimensions the mean scores for industry professionals were rated higher when compared with students and educators, with courage to participate in transformation being the highest rated among all three groups. Implications for hospitality education are presented.

Evolution And Rationale For United States Department Of Defense Electromagnetic Pulse Protection Standard, George H. Baker Iii Nov 2017

Evolution And Rationale For United States Department Of Defense Electromagnetic Pulse Protection Standard, George H. Baker Iii

George H Baker

The United States (US) Department of Defense (DoD) Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) protection standard offers a solid basis for protecting commercial communication, data, and control facilities. Because of the standard’s shielded barrier and test requirements, it is not surprising that there is a strong temptation within industry and government to dismiss the MIL-STD 188-125 approach in favor of less rigorous protection methods. It is important to understand that US DoD EMP protection standard for fixed facilities, MIL-STD-188-125, reflects an evolution by trial and error that spanned a period of decades beginning with the acquisition of the Minuteman Missile System in the …

Proposal For A Dod Combined Battlefield Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Initiative, George H. Baker Iii Nov 2017

Proposal For A Dod Combined Battlefield Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Initiative, George H. Baker Iii

George H Baker

The presentation emphasizes the growing importance of electromagnetic survivability and compatibility. Operation Desert Storm demonstrated the clear military advantage provided by sophisticated electronic weapon and communication systems. In addition, the offensive tactic of taking out the enemy's eyes and ears during the air war paid off, giving our military decisive air superiority. The lessons for the future are clear. High-tech electronics now so dominates the battlefield that the outcome of future conflicts could well be decided by electronics attrition rather than human casualties. Our Desert Storm experience thus accentuates the importance of guaranteeing that our electronic systems will not be …

Testimony Of Dr. George H. Baker, Senior Advisor To The Congressional Emp Commission, George H. Baker Iii

George H Baker

This is the script of testimony before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. It offers a vision for a future in which our electric power systems will be able to operate through or quickly recover from catastrophic failure due to electromagnetic pulse (EMP), cyber, and physical attacks. The scope of the term ‘EMP’ used in this testimony includes both naturally occurring solar storms and the more energetic man-made EMP hazards. The vision has been discussed with members of the electric power industry, and prominent EMP/cyber/physical protection advocates who find it to be supportable and actionable. The nature of EMP, cyber, and …

National-Cultural Differences In Ethical Decision Making: A Comparison Between Oman And United States University Business Students, Candace Mehaffey-Kultgen, Babu P. George, Gregory Weisenborn Aug 2017

National-Cultural Differences In Ethical Decision Making: A Comparison Between Oman And United States University Business Students, Candace Mehaffey-Kultgen, Babu P. George, Gregory Weisenborn

Babu George

The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study is to investigate certain issues related to cultural boundedness in ethical decision making. Omani and American cultural and ethical differences exist, but a serious challenge arises in that very little research exists to identify under which circumstances these differences will affect decision making skills, and how these decision outcomes may impact internationally accepted best business practices (BBP). To achieve this, the investigators developed a Personal Business Ethics Survey (PBES) instrument and compared the ethical choices of Omani and American university students. The PBES instrument employed critical incident technique to elucidate the views of …

From Enrollment To Employment: A Dacum Approach To Information Systems And Information Security And Assurance Curriculum Design, Leila Halawi, Wendi M. Kappers, Aaron Glassman

Wendi M. Kappers, PhD

Issues associated with information security are numerous and diverse. Since the majority of organizational actions rely greatly on information and communication technologies, Information Systems (IS) security is now a main concern for firms, governments, institutes, and society as a whole. As a result, a plethora of graduate programs have been created, covering nearly every aspect of IS security. The authors review the current state of the IS industry presented in the literature, and identify a panel of IS experts in which to explore current job skill needs using a “Developing a Curriculum,” DACUM, process to support curriculum design for two …

Statistical Thinking And Future Thinking, Claudius Claiborne, Mammo Woldie Dec 2016

Statistical Thinking And Future Thinking, Claudius Claiborne, Mammo Woldie

Claudius Claiborne

Business Statistics is one of several courses students in our business school are required to take. It is also one of the courses students have difficulty in performing well. The real benefit of exposure to statistics is not just mathematical understanding, however, but the development of an ability to think conceptually and to think about the future. These perspectives are invaluable preparation for engagement in a global community. This ability has been referred to as “Future Thinking,” (Claiborne, 2014). Future Thinking is, at its core, probabilistic and also empathetic. Those high in future thinking can envision a future with its …

Aurora Health Care’s strategic priorities include quality, patient experience, and caregiver/provider engagement. Because literature shows burnout is directly linked to lower patient satisfaction scores, higher physician/staff turnover, and increased physician alcohol and drug abuse, the team focused their project on addressing burnout by reducing time primary care physicians spend on indirect patient care. We defined “indirect patient care” as time spent by the physician on tasks outside the patient encounter including chart preparation, sorting of the inbox, and ordering tests. Additional time on administrative tasks is often cited as the primary reason physicians leave a practice. The provider in our …

Massive Open Online Courses: Integrating Open Source Technology And Open Access Literature Into Technology Based Degrees, Maurice Dawson, Sharon Burton, Dustin Bessette, Jorja Wright

Maurice Dawson

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a new phenomenon of course delivery for students, faculty, and administrators to use.  As this technology continues to grow in the short term it is essential to develop a method in which Open Source Software (OSS), open source technologies, and open access literature can be incorporated to strengthen the MOOC environment. Strengthening the MOOC environment can be used as a method to increase retention as well as increase enrollment in higher education.  As Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs are going online it is imperative that the tools meet the demands of today’s …
