Information Sources Used By High School Seniors, Charles G. Eberly

Charles G. Eberly

College choice is a critical decision facing many high school students. Although some research has examined where students go for help in making college choices, few studies have examined how race or gender differences of the students or differences in their standardized test scores affect their information sources. Entering college freshmen (N=3,708) indicated which ~f nine information sources (college students, friends, high school counselor, college publication, family, alumni, high school teacher, newspaper, tel~vision) they used in selecting a college.

Responses were analyzed separately for females and males, blacks and whites, in each of four American College Testing (ACT) score categories. …

Commentary: The Role Of Intrapersonal Psychological Variables In Academic School Learning, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1987

Commentary: The Role Of Intrapersonal Psychological Variables In Academic School Learning, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

Intellectual abilities may contribute up to 25% of the variance in measures of academic school learning. However, the role of intrapersonal variables other than cognitive ability (personality traits, motivational dynamic factors, transitory emotional states) has usually been considered as fairly trivial. Past research, to the contrary, suggests that under stressful conditions, the relative contribution of such intrapersonal factors may even become predominant in influencing achievement. When analyses are based on change scores rather than single-occasion measures (which include trait contamination variance), the influence of emotional states on learning is shown to be very significant indeed.

Reflections On The Idea Of Islamic Social Science, Syed Farid Alatas Jan 1987

Reflections On The Idea Of Islamic Social Science, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

When we refer to Islamic social science what do we mean? In what ways can the social sciences be Islamic? There are two such ways. One involves approaching specifically Muslim problems, that is, problems found in Muslim society, in a social scientific manner. An example would be the issue of the relationship between religion and the state. Concepts developed in Western social science would be modified and applied to achieve this aim. The other way in which social science can be Islamic goes beyond the former and involves the idea that social scientific theories, concepts and methodologies can be derived …

China's Keypoint Schools: A Means For Inclusion Of The Elite?, Irving Epstein Dec 1986

China's Keypoint Schools: A Means For Inclusion Of The Elite?, Irving Epstein

Irving Epstein

This study will analyze specific issues concerning the relationship between education, elite recruitment and reproduction and political leadership in China by examining ''keypoint schools," special schools which are better funded and staffed, that tend to draw a high proportion of the children of the elite. This topic is of particular interest given China's widespread student demonstrations of 1986 and the ensuing campaign against "bourgeois liberalization" conducted by party conservatives. Therefore, some effort will also be made to frame these events within a larger theoretical context. We will use Kenneth Jowitt's theoretical model of stages of development within Communist societies, to …

Preparing Non-Experienced Teachers Of Adults, John A. Henschke Edd Dec 1986

Preparing Non-Experienced Teachers Of Adults, John A. Henschke Edd

John A. Henschke

The expensive growth of adult and continuing education has brought with it many teachers who have subject matter expertise, but have no background, training or experience in teaching adults. While there are many of these people who are naturally successful in teaching adults, others may need assistance in becoming equipped for effective teaching in an adult learning setting. Attention is given to some adult education literature which implies, without directly stating, that research on the value of the training needs to emerge out of the model of practice. This research issue paper sets forth a new five-step theoretical model of …
