The Influence Of Feminist Pedagogy On Student Participation And Student Perception Of Learning Environment In Distance Education: A Comparative Study Of Web-Based Graduate Distance Education Courses, Tammy R. Johnson

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the level of feminist pedagogy employed in a course and student participation or student perception in that course. The study attempted to measure the level of feminist pedagogy employed in eight randomly selected, web-based distance education courses using a researcher-created instrument: The Feminist Pedagogy Scoring Rubric. Additionally, student perception of learning environment in each course was analyzed through the use of the Distance and Open Learning Environment Scale (DOLES). Sometimes the circles of light punctuating the shade are clear, separate and crisp, as though light is being propagated as particles, but if the pin-hole gaps between leaves are very close together, they will project compound or superimposed circles that look like the waves that Thomas Young saw in his double slit experiment in 1803-4. Furman University prizes itself on being an engaged learning, liberal arts institution with extensive faculty-student interaction. 96% of students live on campus, leading some to question whether reducing face-to-face instructional time makes any sense pedagogically. Coming from a different institution that encouraged faculty to create hybrid courses, and seeing the creativity and freedom that offered, I wanted to experiment with the format in this new institutional environment. It's about a rabbit who loves peas and steals them from a little girl's garden; that is, until she captures him! For more than twenty years I have been teaching college and university lecture/discussion courses in the typical classroom setting. The classrooms have usually consisted of thirty to forty chairs with fixed attached desks organized in neat rows, all facing front. There was little opportunity to alter the configuration because of the confined space, time, and the other classes that preceded and followed mine. In the fall of 2008 this all changed when I began to restructure my teaching space to be a more activity permissible classroom.
