Doing More With Barely Enough: Narratives Of An Undergraduate Tutor Researcher And Mentor, Andrea Rosso Efthymiou, Santiago Zea

We expand the field’s focus on contingent labor to include part-time student employees’ experiences in addition to the experiences of part-time and contingent faculty. This article uses autoethnography and diary studies as frameworks for understanding the experiences of undergraduate tutor labor, particularly as it involves undergraduate research. Further, we show how a faculty mentor and writing center director’s view of a student tutor’s contingency can lead to revised approaches in writing center administration.

The University of Denver has several funding options for undergraduate students seeking to carry out research under the tutelage of experienced faculty members, present their findings on a national or international stage, and implement scholarly community outreach initiatives. These funding options have helped defray the costs associated with conducting and presenting research for thousands of students and faculty and are an important facet of the research experience at DU. Here the Editorial Board explores the various funding options undergraduate students have access to throughout their research experience(s) at DU.

Preparing Undergraduates For Agriculture And Food Research Careers: An Internship Paradigm, Rebecca Mott, Todd Lorenz, Jo Britt-Rankin

The University of Missouri Integrated STEM Internship Program (MU-ISIP) is a 9-week internship experience that helps prepare undergraduates for the workforce or graduate school in four AFRI areas: (a) plant health and production, (b) animal health and production, (c) food safety, nutrition and health, and (d) agricultural economics and rural communities. This program helps address the need for the next generation of agriculturalists and food scientists through experiential learning. Additionally, it exposes undergraduates to Extension as a career option. This article outlines our approach to MU-ISIP and lessons learned during the program’s inception.

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

Undergraduate minority retention and graduation rates in STEM disciplines is a nationally recognized challenge for workforce growth and diversification. The Benjamin Banneker Scholars Program (BBSP) was a five-year undergraduate study developed to increase minority student retention and graduation rates at an HBCU. The program structure utilized a family model as a vehicle to orient students to the demands of college. Program activities integrated best K-12 practices and workforce skillsets to increase academic preparedness and career readiness. Findings revealed that a familial atmosphere improved academic performance, increased undergraduate research, and generated positive perceptions of faculty mentoring. Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Communication Sciences and Disorders SoTL Lab was designed to provide hands-on research experiences to undergraduate students on a large scale. Student reflections on experiences within the SoTL Lab identify the value of collaboration, development of confidence, and exposure to the entire research process as key outcomes. These experiences foster development of research skills and may lead students to consider academic careers.

Extracurricular undergraduate research seems to improve student success in academic programs, but little research has been conducted in aviation settings to support this phenomenon.

This study aims to address the gap in the body of research by investigating the experiences of aviation students who have participated in extracurricular research at the undergraduate level. This case study, conducted within a large aviation program at a mid-sized Midwestern university, qualitatively examines the perceptions and experiences of these students.

Ultimately, what can and should an introductory course in the history of art do? What difference can it make and what work can it perform? To fully contemplate these questions and radically rethink the standard large-lecture survey, in an experiment, it was taught as an advanced seminar to both majors and general education non-majors, with “global understanding” privileged over extensive content knowledge. For six years, Greg Spaulding, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, has assigned a unique challenge to teams of Intro to Mechanical Engineering students: They must design and build a working vehicle that one person can drive and ride. In addition, it must be powered solely by a cordless drill. An undergraduate research experience can provide a unique opportunity for students to learn and grow as scientists; when positive, this experience is often transformative and motivates students to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduate degrees or careers. Conversely, negative research experiences can sour a student’s opinion of research, propagate misconceptions of graduate school, and lead to attrition from STEM fields. Negative research experiences can be equally devastating for faculty mentors and may result in reluctance to mentor future research students. K-State Libraries’ services, materials and faculty help students in their academic pursuits year-round. The Libraries are also proud to recognize outstanding original research once it’s completed. In 2013, the Libraries established the Kirmser Undergraduate Research Award. Sometimes winning research projects come from unexpected sources. Like a hay bale. David Leiszler (Clifton), Peter Masters (Troy) and Austin Schmitz (Axtell) created an attachment for a skid-steer loader that could lift a bale and safely remove the net wrap while the farmer remains in the vehicle.

A Developmental Model Of Research Mentoring, Renata A. Revelo, Michael Loui

We studied mentoring relationships between undergraduate and graduate students in a summer undergraduate research program, over three years. Using a grounded theory approach, we created a model of research mentoring that describes how the roles of the mentor and the student can change. Whereas previous models of research mentoring ignored student roles and treated mentor roles as static, our model focuses on the development of the mentoring relationship over time. Our model explains how conflicts can occur if the mentor role does not match the maturity level of the student.

The inaugural issue of “Crossing Borders: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship” was released in February 2015, by Karin Westman; Philip and Jeune Kirmser were strong supporters of education and shared a love of music, languages and traveling. Philip was a professor of civil engineering at K-State for some 60 years, and Jeune was an English teacher, a school social worker, a poet and longtime school board observer.
