Moving The Library: Bringing Resources To Students (Using A Learning Management System), Karen Venturella Malnati, Steven Shapiro, Sara Tarpley
Moving The Library: Bringing Resources To Students (Using A Learning Management System), Karen Venturella Malnati, Steven Shapiro, Sara Tarpley
Charleston Library Conference
Students are increasingly finding library resources online due to the explosion in online courses and the use of course management software for all courses, whether fully online, hybrid, or traditional face-to-face courses. Librarians from Union County College (a two-year community college) and Montclair State University (a large research library) discussed the various approaches used to promote and market library services and resources using their institutions’ library management system (LMS). A representative from Gale Cengage presented how Gale is connecting library content to the classroom while helping libraries raise their profile on campus.
Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland
Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland
Charleston Library Conference
A recent sign of the technological transformation of scholarship is the consolidation of views about the emergence of the “digital scholar,” a variation on the influential reform minded account of faculty work associated with Ernest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered (1990). An essential feature of this new form of academic practice and identity is named “social scholarship,” or participation in scholarly communications via the growing variety of digital networks for professional interaction. Scholars and librarians can recognize the change while acknowledging the durability of academic workflow conventions. Libraries can guide the faculty in social scholarship and be gadflies in matters of the …
The Nuts And Bolts Of Supporting Change And Transformation For Research Librarians, Mira Waller, Heidi J. Tebbe
The Nuts And Bolts Of Supporting Change And Transformation For Research Librarians, Mira Waller, Heidi J. Tebbe
Charleston Library Conference
Libraries have a rich tradition of providing services and support to researchers. In recent years, changing technology, evolving research methods and requirements, and the transforming landscape of scholarly communication have revealed a need for libraries to actively engage scholars and participate in the entire research lifecycle. As liaison and subject librarian roles shift to a more holistic and engagement-focused model, it is important that libraries provide them with the tools and resources to develop new skills.
This paper will focus on three ways in which the North Carolina State University Libraries created and supported relevant training and opportunities for research …
Post-Acquisition Management And The Issue Of Inaccessibility, Beth Caruso
Post-Acquisition Management And The Issue Of Inaccessibility, Beth Caruso
Charleston Library Conference
Though advocates are calling for publishers to develop born-accessible e-books to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) standards and the EPUB 3.0 measures now backed by the Society for Disability Studies, the realistic timespan for this achievement to become standard practice is far from ideal. To equitably serve users with disabilities, stronger technology and a mindset toward accessibility must become the standard in electronic collections. Librarians are expected to have a strong working knowledge of the library’s collections but receive little training in best practices for assisting patrons with disabilities. We cannot wait …
Rolling With Pda And Dda: How Academic Libraries Can Use Patron-Driven And Demand-Driven Acquisition Techniques To Build Library Collections With Minimal Management And Budget, Kerry A. Falloon
Charleston Library Conference
Patron-driven and demand-driven acquisitions (PDA/DDA) have been utilized for some time in academic libraries, but some university libraries are still new to the process. With changes in the last couple of years regarding shortterm monograph loans becoming cost ineffective, the popularity of streaming video PDA, and library materials budgets increasingly being cut, the conundrum of successfully implementing a DDA/PDA program and how to evaluate its effectiveness is a question many libraries need to answer. In the fall of 2015, the College of Staten Island Library-CUNY, implemented a small DDA monograph pilot program with Yankee Book Peddler (YBP) and EBSCOhost e-books …
Housing Diversity In Children’S Literature, Carla Earhart
Housing Diversity In Children’S Literature, Carla Earhart
Charleston Library Conference
Previous studies have examined diversity in children’s literature: Gender diversity, racial diversity, religious diversity, and diversity in family composition. This project examines an often overlooked diversity issue in children’s literature: Housing diversity. In the stories they read and the accompanying images, children need to see a variety of housing environments and need to see the settings and the people portrayed in a positive manner.
Renting an apartment is an increasingly popular housing option for many families. However, many children’s books glamorize living in a traditional house. Using a rubric designed by the course instructor, students in a university immersive learning …
Apples To Oranges: Comparing Streaming Video Platforms, Steven Milewski, Monique Threatt
Apples To Oranges: Comparing Streaming Video Platforms, Steven Milewski, Monique Threatt
Charleston Library Conference
Librarians rely on an ever-increasing variety of platforms to deliver streaming video content to our patrons. These two presentations will examine different aspects of video streaming platforms to gain guidance from the comparison of platforms. The first will examine the accessibility compliance of the various video streaming platforms for users with disabilities by examining accessibility features of the platforms. The second will be a comparison of subject usage of two of the larger video streaming platform providers (Alexander Street Press and Kanopy) done at Indiana University Bloomington, a large public university.
Collection Dashboards For Selectors, Lindsay A. Cronk, Wenli Gao
Collection Dashboards For Selectors, Lindsay A. Cronk, Wenli Gao
Charleston Library Conference
While collections dashboards are often used as an external communications tool, they have additional applications for improving internal processes and assisting subject selectors. The value of collection visualization for analytics and strategy cannot be underestimated as visualizations can help clarify complex information to improve decision-making. This paper summarizes the current efforts to deploy collection dashboards at the University of Houston libraries. Using Tableau to parse and visualize collections data, the library is embedding visualization frameworks into the acquisitions calendar to enhance selection and deselection processes.
Keeping Up Accessibility Practices And How It Relates To Purchasing And Collection Development In Academic Libraries: A Case Study At The College Of Staten Island Library, Kerry A. Falloon
Charleston Library Conference
At the College of Staten Island (CSI) Library-CUNY, the library has access to over 160 different electronic resources. A concerted effort started in 2016 to start collecting relevant voluntary product accessibility template (VPAT) statements from new and current vendors and integrate these new practices into acquisition and electronic resources (ER) workflows. The paper will discuss the responsibilities of purchasing agents in libraries, acquisition or ER librarians, in regard to understanding disability law and how these legal mandates apply when investigating, acquiring, and maintaining electronic resources. Relevant tools will be discussed, in particular the use of VPATs and WCAG 2.0 guidelines …
