African American teachers are slowly leaving the classroom, causing an imbalance in the student/teacher ratio (NCES, 2019). According to the National Center for Education Statistics, African American teachers make up 3% in California and 7% nationally. This study sought to understand the reasons for the decline in the number of African American teachers in public school settings. When considering specific instructional areas associated with the performance of teachers, do teachers and administrators in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) school system differ in their perceptions regarding the appropriateness of inservice education programs? Procedure. Three sample groups were derived from the population of SDA educators in California. The purpose of this study was to determine what, if any, relationships exist between beginning teaching effectiveness and patterns of professional preparation. Specific objectives of the study were to: (1) identify the component parts of the preparation of most effective and least effective teachers, (2) determine if such components constituted patterns that can be identified, and (3) determine if such patterns, if present, are related to teaching effectiveness.

It was hypothesized that there are no significant relationships between teaching effectiveness and patterns of professional preparation of first·-year elementary school teachers.
