The Cal Poly Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies (LAES), Architecture, and Computer Science programs are working with the Downtown Sacramento Partnership to redesign a pedestrian passageway connecting historical Sacramento California with modern Sacramento. The goal is to create an inviting space for visitors and locals that fills the passageway with interactive light displays celebrating the history and culture of Sacramento. This passageway will also provide a continually changing venue for engaging, family-friendly artworks connected to community festivals, fairs, and markets.

With the support of an education grant from the Hearst Foundation for 2017-2018, the Cal Poly team is researching …

The Discursive Construction Of Learning Opportunities, Thomas Fowler Iv, Ethny Stewart Phd Mar 2017

The Discursive Construction Of Learning Opportunities, Thomas Fowler Iv, Ethny Stewart Phd

Thomas Fowler IV, DPACSA, FAIA

Researchers who enter new learning environments or disciplines, those that are outside their own disciplines of study, are often required to follow the roots and routes of the records to gain an emic (insider) understanding of the local actors, artifacts, and language. Through exploration of everyday patterns, the researcher begins to uncover what actors are required to know, understand, and construct to engage socially, professionally, and academically. For this poster, I will make visible the processes required to gain an emic understanding in a 24/7 access third year undergraduate architecture studio at university site in California.

The present study is …

Postscript Essay For Phd Thesis Dissertation [Ethny A. Stewart, "The Disciplinary Practices And Processes Of Critique In A Third-Year Architecture Design Studio," University Of California Santa Barbara,Ca, December 2016], Thomas Fowler Iv

Thomas Fowler IV, DPACSA, FAIA

This is a timely research project – the study of the disciplinary practices and processes of the design studio. From my experiences of over 2 decades teaching at three institutions (22 at this central coast university) and a similar number of years working as a practicing architect, this research comes at an important time — since this learning environment has not been the focus of much prior research. There are also a number of myths that are not true about the design studio, that range from a classroom environment that has no structure and the difficultly in assessing what is …
