The number of students in American schools whose first language is not English has grown dramatically in the past twenty years. Crawford (2004) reports that the Number of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students nearly doubled in the 1990s. According to Crawford, the number of LEP students in 2001 was more than 8 percent of the K-12 enrollment in American public schools. Goldenberg reports (2008) that in 1990 one in 20 public school students was an English Language Learner (ELL) and in 2008 the figure was one in nine. This paper discusses brain-based learning and its relation to classroom instruction. A growing quantity of research currently exists regarding how the brain perceives, processes, and ultimately learns new information. English Language Learners struggle on a daily basis upon entering United States schools. The delivery of ELL content has been addressed on a regular basis; however, the design of ELL curriculum does not receive adequate attention. In this project, the author created a Power Point presentation that assists educators with a foundation of origin for ELLs, addresses the need for concentration of ELL curriculum development, reminds the audience of textbook bias, and presents a variety of coteaching models. The presentation is designed for elementary educators, although it may be adapted to any level.

This project was initiated in order to help general and special education teachers in elementary classrooms with successful strategies, to assess and teach students with autism how to better comprehend text. The unit developed does two things: one, it educates teachers and students on a number of strategies to use in reading comprehension, and two, it helps students with autism gain important social skills. Each lesson is designed to incorporate Colorado Content Reading and Writing Standards, with aligned Social and Access skills.

This applied project identifies these differences and provides strategies that teachers can use in the classroom. The strategies are effective for boys and girls at the elementary school level. Implementing these strategies will enable teachers to address the gender specific learning needs of both boys and girls.

Advantages of Looping at the Elementary Level Recently, looping has been getting attention from educators and educational reformers as a low cost, easily implemented way to improve education. In this project, the author created an inservice presentation designed as an introduction to the practice of looping at the elementary level. The target audience was elementary teachers and administrators. The presentation provided a brief history of the practice of looping, the theory behind the practice, a synthesis of the benefits and possible challenges of looping, and finally, several tips and considerations for the implementation of looping.

Quantitative research methods were used including observations and tallies of reading rates, data compilation, generation of scatterplots, and descriptive statistical analysis of the results. The research focused on observations of 69 fourth graders from two fourth grade classes in a private parochial elementary school in Las Vegas, Nevada. The students each read a 198-word passage to measure oral reading rate. A positive relationship between oral reading rate and reading comprehension was then determined. As a result, teachers may be able to use an oral reading rate test to design curriculum before the Terra Nova achievement test is administered in September. …
