Student achievement has become a critical concern in education since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Legislation of 2002. At the same time, the retention rate of beginning teachers is 50% within the first five years. This low retention rate affects student achievement, building initiatives and districts' finances. Research indicates that comprehensive induction programs can raise the rate of retention of beginning teachers. One component of a comprehensive induction program is site based professional development. Effective Mentoring Programs: A Guide to Developing Successful Programs The following research project addressed the current state of the educational community and focused on mentor programs and how they can help reduce attrition and provide adequate support for beginning teachers. The research addressed the challenges first year teachers face; the author discussed mentor programs as an ideal support mechanism for beginning teachers. Single Sex Classrooms, How Boys and Girls Learn Differently Gurian (2004) examined the differences between girls and boys. He reported girls and boys learn fundamentally differently. This applied project identifies these differences and provides strategies that teachers can use in the classroom. The strategies are effective for boys and girls at the elementary school level. Implementing these strategies will enable teachers to address the gender specific learning needs of both boys and girls.

Students Who Experience Emotional Crises: How to Ensure That Learning Takes Place in the Classroom The purpose of this project was to provide a resource for educators to use as a reference when a child in their classroom experiences crisis. After speaking with local teaching staff, this researcher concluded that: (a) many teachers are ill prepared to deal with students who have emotional crises, and (b) the majority of support for students comes from school psychiatrists or counselors.
