Development And Validation Of The Information Literacy Assessment Scale For Education (Ilas-Ed), Penny Beile Mar 2005

Development And Validation Of The Information Literacy Assessment Scale For Education (Ilas-Ed), Penny Beile

Penny Beile

Few populations exist where it is more important to produce information literate individuals than teacher candidates, yet few would suggest that practitioners newly entering the field are adequately prepared to model and teach information literacy to their students. Consequently, information literacy has recently been established as a key outcome by a number of teacher education accrediting bodies and professional associations. Only in the last few years has there been an attempt to develop a standardized scale to assess general information literacy skills, and at the time of this writing no standardized tool exists that measures the information literacy levels of teacher …

Penny Beile

Few constituencies exist where it is more important to produce informationliterate individuals than teacher candidates, yet rarely is it suggested that practitioners entering the field are adequately prepared to teach and model information literacy to their students. As a result, information literacy has been established as a key outcome by anumber of teacher education accrediting bodies and professional associations. Corollaryto this initiative is the effort to develop valid instruments that assess information literacy skills. Yet, at the time of this dissertation, no rigorously reviewed instruments wereuncovered that measure the information literacy skills levels of teacher candidates. The study describes the development …

Characteristics Of Education Doctoral Dissertation References: An Inter-Institutional Analysis Of Review Of Literature Citations, Penny Beile, David Boote, Elizabeth Killingsworth Apr 2003

Characteristics Of Education Doctoral Dissertation References: An Inter-Institutional Analysis Of Review Of Literature Citations, Penny Beile, David Boote, Elizabeth Killingsworth

Penny Beile

This study had two purposes: to examine the expertise of doctoral students in their use of the scholarly literature and to investigate the use of citation analysis as a tool for collection development. Analysis of 1,842 coded citations gleaned from 30 education dissertations awarded in 2000 from 3 institutions in the United States revealed that journal articles, at 45%, were cited most frequently, followed by monographs (33.9%) and "other" (18.3%), with magazines and Web sites contributing less than 2% each of the total material types cited. The study examined 858 journal and magazine citations, which were found in 239 unique …

Effectiveness Of Course Integrated And Repeated Library Instruction On Library Skills Of Education Students, Penny Beile Dec 2002

Effectiveness Of Course Integrated And Repeated Library Instruction On Library Skills Of Education Students, Penny Beile

Penny Beile

Given the investment in librarian time and energy and faculty and student time constraints, it was deemed important to assess effectiveness of course-integrated library instruction, and more specifically, whether repeated library instruction has a cumulative effect on student learning. As such, students who began the study with no prior library instruction experience (n=45) were contrasted with students who had completed a library walking tour and worksheet (n=34) and with those who had attended previous course-integrated library instruction (n=27). A pre-test/post-test research design was utilized, with course-integrated library instruction as treatment. Analysis indicated a statistically significant difference (dependent t(105)=2.18, p<.05) between …

The Effect Of Library Instruction Learning Environments On Self-Efficacy Levels And Learning Outcomes Of Graduate Students In Education, Penny Beile, David Boote Mar 2002

The Effect Of Library Instruction Learning Environments On Self-Efficacy Levels And Learning Outcomes Of Graduate Students In Education, Penny Beile, David Boote

Penny Beile

The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of three learning environments: (1) campus-based students who attended a classroom library instruction session; (2) campus-based students who completed a Web-based library tutorial; and (3) distance students who completed a Web-based library tutorial on library skills self-efficacy levels and learning outcomes among graduate students of education. Participant were 49 degree- and certificate seeking graduate students who completed a survey before and after the tutorials. Regardless of the learning environment, all groups significantly improved the library skills learning outcomes, as indicated by scores on the measure of library skills. Exposure to …
