This literature review explores the research of what makes a trauma-informed school and what interventions are effective in implementing trauma-informed teaching practices to help students with past traumatic experiences become more success in school. Research documents a large number of students who have experienced trauma and that this trauma has a significant impact on a child’s development, both cognitive and social. Teachers and schools are at the forefront of this problem and ideally suited to address this problem. This literature review revealed key areas to focus when implementing trauma-informed teaching practices. These include relationships, resiliency, and climate and culture.

Children with autism spectrum disorders often struggle socially and emotionally in the classroom setting due to overstimulation. The purpose of this literature review is to synthesize research on the effects of Dr. A. Jean Ayre's sensory integration therapy intervention for students with an autism spectrum disorder, specifically as they are applied in the classroom. Ayres was an occupational therapist, educational psychologist, and an advocate for individuals with special needs. Dr. Ayres developed the sensory integration therapy approach, or SIT, in the 1970s, and SIT has since been used by hundreds of occupational therapists around the world. This action research study focused on first-year teachers who were assigned to teach in grades 6-12 at a suburban school district and were involved in a mandated new teacher mentor program. The researcher evaluated participants’ self-efficacy using the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) and a series of qualitative questions to determine if a first-year teacher’s self-efficacy changes during the first semester of their mentorship experiences and if each domain of a first-year teacher’s self-efficacy (student engagement, instructional strategies, or classroom management) changes during the first semester of their mentorship experience. This action research study investigated how formative data use influences teaching and learning, and what impact the formative process has on student outcomes. The study took place in a first-grade classroom with a group of five students over the course of four weeks. Participants were selected for the study because they scored in the 2nd to 11th percentile rank on the FastBridge Early Reading English assessment. Quantitative data was collected weekly for each of the four weeks using FastBridge Word Segmenting progress monitoring and then compared to baseline data taken before the study. This action research study investigates the relationship between culturally responsive teaching and the impact on student engagement. For six weeks, the researcher implemented culturally responsive teaching strategies in a virtual first-grade classroom. The participants included fourteen six- and seven-year-olds who attended public school in Northern Virginia. The instruction was completed in a virtual setting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the start and conclusion of the study, students were given a survey to measure the class climate. Student engagement was observed daily and documented on a weekly observation tally sheet. The purpose of this action research project is to show that gains in literacy skills through implementation of guided reading practices at the preschool level, if successful, prove that guided reading instruction is a meaningful and purposeful practice in teaching literacy skills at the early childhood level. The researcher worked with 47 preschool children ages four and five. Participants attended a state-funded preschool program in an elementary school building. The purpose of this action research is to describe the effects of the application of daily growth mindset lessons upon the accuracy and level of work completion in math assessments. Participants included the researcher’s class of 13 third grade students from a small rural Midwest school district. Students participated in a daily growth mindset lesson intervention for a period of 4 weeks. Data was collected using math assessments and growth mindset surveys. This school improvement plan establishes a school wide outline for the training and implementation of social-emotional instruction through Boys Town's Well-Managed Schools curriculum. The plan addresses the need for social-emotional intervention supports and resources for classroom teachers. A review of literature was conducted to support the plan and examines how student behaviors impact classroom learning, recognizes the importance of explicit social-emotional instruction, and delves into how social-emotional interventions improve the classroom learning environment.

This literature review explores the importance of patterning in early math education. Patterning skills are a unique predictor of future success in mathematics. With the Common Core not addressing patterning as a standard in early math education, many educators have come to believe that the importance of patterning is not significant. However, past and present research studies have yielded convincing results that demonstrate the importance of including patterning in early math curriculums. This action research was driven by the researcher's interest in reading fluency and specifically about using a class-wide intervention to help increase students' words per minute using Varied Practice Reading. The purpose of this action research project was to determine if research-based early literacy interventions are more effective than teacher-created early literacy interventions with special education students on letter identification and letter sound recognition. Before the interventions began the students were given the Foundational Skills Survey in Letter Identification and Letter Sound Recognition by Really Great Reading. This score was the baseline for the reported data. This action research study investigated the impact that social-emotional skills had on academic growth during the first 8 weeks of the 2020-2021 school year for a class of first grade students. Academic growth was evaluated by the students math gains measured by the STAR math assessment. The SAEBRS teacher assessment was used to measure the students social-emotional skills, specifically social, emotional, and academic behavior. The data did not indicate statistical significance, however, there is literature that suggests the importance of teaching social-emotional skills to young children to improve their social, emotional, and academic behavior and support their education and life.

Data was collected that examined pretest and posttest results of high school students in grades 9-12. Curriculum mapping allows schools to have coherent alignment of state standards across grade levels. A research site was in need of both vertical and horizontal alignment of standards. A school improvement plan was created using research-based methods. The plan allows teachers to work collaboratively within professional learning communities to unpack state standards to note priority standards, establish “I can” statements, form big ideas, pose essential questions, and create assessments to ultimately create engaging units in all classrooms. Teachers will work together to eliminate over and under coverage of standards.

This ex-post facto research was conducted to identify preschool parents’ preferred method to utilize when communicating with their child’s teacher. It also was conducted to determine if the preferred method differed based on socioeconomic status. The researcher tracked the primary ways families chose to communicate most frequently by recording how many times emails, phone calls, handwritten notes, and texting through applications such as Remind, ClassDojo, and Facebook Messenger were sent by parents. Data analyzed through a Friedman Test, a Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and a Mann-Whitney U Test revealed parents significantly communicated more through texting applications.
