The problem of this thesis is this: the writer believes that the present level of achievement of rural school pupils is somewhat below what it should be to successfully master materials in the ordinary music textbooks as now written and adapted in this state. He believes that study of this problem will be beneficial in the matter of writing future materials or in rearranging the program in music for rural school pupils.

The specific problem of this thesis is, “A comparison of scholarship ratings of high school graduates who participate and those who do not participate in extra-curricular activities.” The scope of extra-curricular activities varies with the size of the school and its equipment. It is therefore necessary in this study to limit extra-curricular activities to these particulars: athletics, music, clubs, debate, and dramatics, in order to have a definite basis for comparison.

The student activities program ot the modern secondary school is designed to meet the following needs of adolescents: (1) curiosity, (2) desire to travel, (3) imitation, (4) gregariousness, (5) loyalty, (6) love of approbation, (7) sympathy, and (8) love of mastery. Many of these characteristics are not met in a purely academic environment, so most, it not all, public schools provide a student activities program to complement the academic program of the school.
