Black Bears' head coach John Giannini begins his third season at the University of Maine with more excitement than any year in recent history. His squad features five potential all-conference players in Allen Ledbetter (Gary, Ind.), a second team All AMERICA EAST choice in 1997-98, guard Fred Meeks (Mobile, Ala.) and Marcus Wills (New Bedford, Mass.), both among the league leaders in scoring all year long, as well as Boston College transfers, guard Andy Bedard (Rumford, Maine) and forward Nate Fox (Plainfield, Ill.).

As the 1996-97 academic year dawns, major changes are underway at America East. A new name heralds the dawn of a new era as the former North Atlantic Conference stands poised to take its rightful place as a rising star in college athletics. The league's 10 presidents endorsed the idea of the new designation last spring and with it, ushered in a year of great change.
