Mind mapping was introduced as a culturally relevant pedagogy aimed at enhancing the teaching and learning experience in a general education, Environmental Science class for mostly Emirati English Language Learners (ELL). Anecdotal evidence suggests that the students are very artistic and visual and enjoy group-based activities. It was decided to integrate an intervention that would incorporate Emirati artistic and collaborative practices, in an effort to engage them on all levels, such that their academic attainment is positively affected. Preliminary results based on a group of 60 students, from on-going active research, suggest that this method is quite useful in helping …

Results indicated that this approach proved to be a success and demonstrated very clearly where the students' strengths and weaknesses resided. …

Instructional Videos As Part Of A 'Flipped' Approach In Academic Writing, Marion Engin, Senem Donanci

All Works

This paper reports on a project in which students watched short instructional videos on aspects of academic writing as part of a 'flipped classroom' approach at an English-medium university in the United Arab Emirates. The authors present the video tutorial project in the context of the flipped classroom, and evaluate student satisfaction with the video input. The findings suggest that although most students liked watching the videos at home, and found the input easy to understand, they still felt the need for teacher explanations. One conclusion from this study is that students are not yet ready for a complete flipped …

© 2016. This paper presents the major findings from a study conducted with six different universities in the U.S. regarding their use of the Learning Analytics (LA) capabilities available within their learning management systems (LMS). Data was collected from an online survey instrument, in-depth interviews with IT directors and academic administrators, and a case study in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. One observation is that universities are attempting to make better use of new analytics functions and the data stored in the university LMS in order to make more informed decisions regarding short-term and longterm goals and objectives.
