The survey questions for the transfer student WELS were developed similarly to the previous WELS surveys. WELS researchers contacted various departments and individuals at Western to discuss information they needed about Western's transfer students. Additionally, WELS researchers conducted a focus group of transfer students in order to obtain insight into the transfer student population at Western and identify areas where transfer students differed from the rest of the Western population. Some questions were chosen to parallel previous WELS surveys. Transfer students were asked questions on a variety of topics including previous educational experiences, transfer student orientation, expectations about their Western …

INTRODUCTION The Western Educational Longitudinal Study (WELS) was conceived as a process to obtain data more relevant to Western and its mission than survey data had been able to obtain previously. Rather than continuing to rely on outside survey forms, researchers developed a Western-specific survey form. Development of this survey took about three years, with researchers soliciting input from dozens of individuals, departments and offices. Along the way, WELS researchers also noted where data was already being collected so that doubling up on survey questions was minimized. The final survey form was considered by all participants to be as thorough …

Perceptions Of Subtle Gender Discrimination, Hostility, And Sexual Harassment Among Senior Women Faculty At Western Washington University, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Pamela Jull, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

In 1999, the Faculty Senate approved Western's participation in a national survey of faculty conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI). Western's preliminary analysis of the data revealed that Westerns full-time female faculty reported experiencing sexual harassment at a higher percentage than did full-time female faculty at peer institutions--with each cohort made up approximately 62% tenured faculty and 38% non-tenured faculty. It was also noted that Western's female faculty were more likely to report feeling subtle discrimination than female faculty at peer institutions and less likely to agree that women faculty are treated fairly. Limited by the survey data …

Faculty Judgments Concerning Expanding Western Washington University's Summer Session, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Joseph E. Trimble, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Carl Simpson

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

During the Winter quarter, 1996, nearly three-quarters of the faculty (70.4%) responded to a questionnaire concerning the advisability of expanding the WWU Summer Session to constitute "year-round" operation. Generally, the faculty supports the idea, although only if the program is high-quality and fully supported, if the program operates with few temporary Summer-only faculty, and if pay for Summer Session increases. Most faculty, 71.7%, say Western "definitely" or "probably" should pursue an enlarged Summer Session, while only 16.4% oppose such a move. Support for expanding Summer Session is, however, limited by two concerns. First, only about 45% of academic year faculty …

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

In identifying and organizing its research, program evaluation, and outcomes assessment activities Western Washington University's Office of lnstitutional Assessment and Testing (OIAT) strives to obtain and generate data and information that attempts to provide answers to the following fundamental questions: 1) What do we look like as an institution and how can we improve the quality of the academic and sociocultural climate? 2) What factors contribute to general and specific changes in Western students' attitudes, knowledge, and skills? 3) How can we enrich classroom and instructional experiences to advance and promote effective learning? 4) How successful is each component of …

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Executive Summary: At the request of President Morse and the Student Employment Center's Community Service/Volunteer Program, Western's 1994 alumni survey documented the extent and nature of community service activity by Western students, both as part of their course work and as non-course-based volunteer activities. We refer to these activities as "service learning." We also measured students' impressions concerning the value of their service experiences and estimated the impact of students' community service activities on the Bellingham and Whatcom County communities. Findings are based on responses by 1513 of the 2219 graduates in the Class of '93. Asked whether they had …

Academic Advising At Western: Some Feedback From Alumni, Carl Simpson, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble, Joanna Gregson, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Executive Summary: Repeated studies in recent years, both at Western and elsewhere, have found students less satisfied with advising services than with instruction or various university services. For example, 77% of recent Western alumni are "very" or "mostly" satisfied with the undergraduate courses they took at Western, while 41% are similarly satisfied with the academic advising they received from all sources at Western. Satisfaction with advising received from faculty and major departments was lower than satisfaction with advising from the Academic Advising Center. Because of the concerns these studies raise, Western's Academic Advising Center requested that our 1992 alumni survey …

The projects and activities listed on the separate sheets are completed or are very near completion. In addition, many of the office's activities and projects are on-going and continuous. It should be pointed out that results from some of Western's Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing's (OIAT's) projects stimulated ideas that led to follow-up research and evaluation; therefore, the OIAT continues to expect some of its anticipated findings to lead to additional research which will become pan of the plan in the …
