The problem - This study seeks to present a history of the Teacher Organizations which have functioned in Utah from 1860 to 1940. Since 1892 their association has been known as the Utah Education Association.

The purpose - This study is a phase of the history of education as as such shares in the purposes claimed for such studies. A statement of general purposes of such studies is as follows:

This research project endeavors to supply the need for a vocabulary testing device for the admittance and guidance of entering freshman students at Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, Utah. The need is for a test designed specifically to predict possibilities of success in courses which incoming students encounter and in which they are required to progress at a rate considered satisfactory according to college standards. The problem of this study is to determine, so far as possible, the conditions, reasons, and underlying motives which have led to the dismissal, demotion, or non-issuance of contracts to teachers in the state of Utah during a recent five-year period - 1943-1947, and also what methods have been used in terminating the tenure of those teachers who have been considered undesirable by their employers. The study will seek to reveal the extent to which the professional education associations are influential in determining policies for the dismissal of teachers.
