Academic Background And Prerequisite Skills For Success In College Freshman Physics, Jean Friend Condrey

Instructors of college freshman introductory physics in Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia were surveyed to determine which academic courses, technical skills and general skills acquired in high school are essential for success in their courses. Faculty responses were analyzed using mean and percent frequency, while comparison of their responses by size of physics department was analyzed using chi square. Each student's responses were compared to those of his or her instructor using a paired sample t test. The general skills of English language usage were found to be the most important skills. The purpose of this study was to determine if the principal' s leadership style had a positive effect on students' Science Research Associates Composite Test scores. The correlational method of research was used on fifteen randomly selected public high schools with school populations between six hundred and nine hundred students in the State of Virginia. The Principal Leadership Style Questionnaire was used t o ascertain the leadership style of the principal. The Likert Profile of a School Questionnaire was used to measure the climate of the school.

The present study was designed to evaluate the use of two behavior modification techniques in modifying three inappropriate student behaviors in a secondary classroom. T'he two behavior modification techniques employed were 1) response cost, and 2) the teacher 's use of students' names as discriminative stimuli. The subjects were a D-section Junior English class consisting of fourteen boys and five girls of average intelligence, but who were under­ achieving academically. No data have been discovered determining exactly why or when the first homeroom originated. In a study by Galen Jones published in 1935, it was reported that there were two homerooms introduced between 1875-1879; two in the period 1900-1904; three, in 1905-1909; and nine in the period from 1910-1914. From then on the growth was rapid.

The homeroom appeared and developed with amazing rapidity because it seemed to offer a solution to the strong demand for a type of education which would include proper emphasis upon important physical, social, emotional, and spiritual factors largely ignored in traditional instruction.
