Study Guides: Their Effect On Reading Comprehension In Content Areas In The Third Grade, Ruth Hackenson Jan 1980

Study Guides: Their Effect On Reading Comprehension In Content Areas In The Third Grade, Ruth Hackenson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using study guides in content areas of the elementary curriculum on the general level of comprehension of third grade pupils in those content areas. It appeared from the search of the literature that study guides had been little used for lower elementary students. More frequent use has been with upper elementary and high school students. A study using third grade subjects seemed to be of value for at least two reasons: one, to fill the gap and two, to discover the benefits that might accrue, or to lend credence …

Oral Reading, Silent Reading, And Listening Comprehension: A Comparative Study For Above-Average And Below-Average Readers, Rita M. Joost Jan 1980

Oral Reading, Silent Reading, And Listening Comprehension: A Comparative Study For Above-Average And Below-Average Readers, Rita M. Joost

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

By comparing listening comprehension to reading comprehension for above-average and below-average readers, one can come to some conclusions about where the problem resides for poor readers-whether it be lack of phonic skills or lack of general verbal competence. Because teachers need to know better where to invest their resources, investigations such as mine need to be done.

Comparison Study Of Achievement Of A Group Of Second Grade Students Experiencing Instruction On Bio-Ecosystems Indoors And A Group Of Second Grade Students Experiencing Instruction On Bio-Ecosystems Out-Of-Doors, Voncile Barnes Jackson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the achievement levels of second grade students when twenty-one students experienced instruction on the bio-ecosystems where the learning activities were primarily outdoors along a nature trail and a comparable group of twenty-three students experienced instruction on the same bio-ecosystems where the learning activities were located indoors. An emphasis on literature approach was utilized to teach a set of sixteen objectives centering around an environmental theme. Each group received instruction for-45 minutes daily for a period of three weeks and experienced equivalent "hands-on" learning activities.
A gain score was determined …

Tenth Grade Listening Module, Linda Black Jan 1980

Tenth Grade Listening Module, Linda Black

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to construct a listening module for tenth grade students who were at least four grade levels behind in reading comprehension. The module was designed to be self-pacing, self-checking, motivating and improve factual recall. The module consisted of fifteen taped lessons, a taped pre test and post test, and was introduced by a motivational and directional statement. The lessons were chosen for their highly motivating nature and were organized in order of difficulty and length; the easier and shorter stories at the beginning and gradually getting more difficult and longer. In the module the students …
