Re-Engaging Students In Art History: An Action Research Study, Jenna Hermann

Art 895 Research Papers

In this action research study, I examine different ways to re-engage students in the study of art history. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I sought out more effective and exciting ways to integrate technology when teaching art history to my eighth-grade students. I implement studentled learning strategies as students explore The Met’s website, focusing on the 1900-Present virtual exhibition. I consider if and how this virtual learning platform does or does not make learning about art history more engaging.

Art 895 Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to consider a curriculum that uses the best characteristics of both modernist and pos-tmodernist approaches to art education, and showcases artists that model the forged curriculum. A modernist approach to art education has students emulate the technical skills that has prevailed the Western culture of classical artists. A post-modernism approach is the idea that art education should be more about multiculturalism, social engagement, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Using a qualitative case study, a literature review is analyzed to understand both modernist and post-modernist paradigms. Through discussion, artists that model characteristics from both teaching approaches …

It concludes with a discussion of these artists and the recent literature, with suggestions for age-appropriate activism-based art projects for elementary students.

Combating Chronic Absenteeism With After-School Art Programs, Katherine Obholz

Art 895 Research Papers

Chronic absenteeism is a problem common within our education system, even more so in districts impacted by poverty. Consistent student attendance has and will continue to be an issue within our schools because it is difficult to pinpoint all the causes and issues that affect a student’s attendance. Despite this, art education, and after school art programs have been shown to improve student buy-in and help alleviate the inconsistent gaps in overall student attendance, behavior, test scores, life-skills, and improve participation within the classroom. This paper furthers the investigation by taking into consideration what the Boston and Chicago public afterschool …
