The Medieval Times club digs into European history that is often passed over in the classroom. We will talk about knights, dragons, chivalry, castles, and peasants. Popular myths like King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table and Beowulf - a story that partially inspired the Lord of the Rings - will be discussed. We will also examine some of the larger themes of the Middle Ages, including the Holy Wars, the Roman Empire, the Church, and pagans.

The Relax and Recharge after school club was intended to help students wind down and recover from the stresses of the school day. We led a variety of crafts, exercises, and activities for this purpose. We also intended to provide the students with tools to take back into the school and home for stress management. Our goal was for the students to learn how to be more present, self-aware, and able to manage stress in a healthy way.

Numerous studies have shown that yoga can be very beneficial for kids. Cats and Cows Yoga Club will help children learn the postures of yoga, but also teach them the importance of mindfulness. I include lessons that preach kindness and gratefulness which compliments the practice of yoga very well. Ultimately, children will become aware of how it feels when they deep breathe and the difference it makes in your mood when you focus on mindfulness in your body, mind, and spirit.

Encourage learning about complex, confusing, or even just random topics that were covered in fictional stories. Later on, shift the narrative from "discover new topics from what we are reading" to "what is the author trying to say here? What was their intent? What clues is the author giving us, and what do you think will happen next in the story?". This brings elementary schoolers a first interaction with deeper English themes, such as author's intent, at a low-stakes interaction to build confidence in the works and in themselves.
