This chapter focuses on assessment as an integral element of the continued success and sustainability of undergraduate research (UR) and describes the EvaluateUR method, a proven approach to assessing the skills and competencies of UR students, which also contributes directly to student learning. The chapter concludes with brief remarks on the assessment of course-based UR and two projects now in progress that are adapting the EvaluateUR method to these assessments.

Videos for Physics Teaching
We describe a curricular innovation for STEM teacher preparation -- the use of video projects in undergraduate and graduate physics courses for future physics teachers at SUNY Buffalo State. US courses were adapted under the guidance of our colleagues’ similar work at Universität zu Köln [1]. Our students prepared end of course short “proof of concept” rough video vignettes of 5-10min addressing both physics content and physics pedagogical topics. YouTube [2] example videos are provided, and insights are shared.

In recent years, studies have shown that a number of students have experienced a positive effect in student development inside and outside of the classroom when they participate in a musical theater club. This study determined the degree to which musical theater clubs impacted student confidence and social skills. It was important for this literature review to determine the different methods and strategies, teachers, students and administrators used in order to create a positive outcome for student development, social skills and building confidence. It was discovered that there was not many studies that showed using creative drama as a treatment …

As the United States continues to become increasingly diverse, the number of underrepresented populations being served by child welfare agencies is also steadily increasing. Children of color comprise 33 percent of the children in the United States but represent over 55 percent of children in the child welfare system (Detlaff, 2015; Pew Commission, 2014). Therefore, in addition to being concerned about child safety, well-being and permanency, agencies must also be concerned with the cultural issues that arise when working with diverse populations (Nathaniel, Howze & Prince, 2009). Empirical evidence confirms that the race of a child and their family has …

Lifebooks present opportunities for children to have fun while building a concept of “self”, strengthening attachment, and developing a sense of permanency in their lives.
A lifebook shares a child's life in a chronological manner. It could be a book, a shoebox, or whatever the child deems an important space. One of the things that a lifebook includes are: official documents, child made pictures, documents, drawings, letters, and other writings that are important to the child.

Evaluating A Summer Undergraduate Research Program: Measuring Student Outcomes And Program Impact, Jill Singer, Bridget Zimmerman
Earth Sciences Faculty Publications
At SUNY-Buffalo State we have undertaken a multi-year effort aimed at developing and field-testing an evaluation methodology for measuring student learning and related outcomes in our summer undergraduate research program. Our goal was to extend the findings of the many valuable studies that had already been done on the impact of undergraduate research on participating students (Gregerman et al. 1998; Alexander et al. 2000; Merkel 2001; Bauer and Bennett 2003; Seymour et al. 2004; Lopatto 2004; and Hunter et al. 2007). As described in Singer and Weiler (2009), our aim was to obtain reliable independent assessments of program impact without …

Buffalo State College (Buffalo State) is the largest of the 13 colleges of arts and sciences in the SUNY (State University of New York) system. Its total enrollment is nearly 11,000, with an undergraduate enrollment of 9,139. Experiential pedagogies, including undergraduate research, are reflected across the undergraduate programs and Buffalo State College has placed increasing emphasis and resources on expanding undergraduate research opportunities for students in all academic disciplines. Our use of the term ‘research’ is broadly defined by the standard practices established within each academic discipline and includes scholarship and creative activities. It is assumed that the activity will …
