Mobile Devices As An Instructional Tool To Promote Teachers’ Metacognition: Insights From Pakistani Teachers, Zainab Shazadi Javed Ms, Fatima Javed Ms, Mehvish Mufti Ms

The Qualitative Report

The use of mobile phones as an instructional tool by teachers is not yet widespread, and there is a need to enhance the literature on how this experience affects their metacognition. While existing literature focuses on students' experiences, little is known about the experiences of teachers. This qualitative study utilized an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to examine the experiences of primary and secondary school teachers in Karachi, Pakistan, who used mobile devices for teaching online during the COVID-19 pandemic for at least 12 weeks. Nine participants were interviewed to collect data, and two themes emerged from the research: "Employed Metacognition …

Interviewing The Interviewers: How Qualitative Professors Assess Interviews In Their Classes, Meredith C. Massey, Leia K. Cain

The Qualitative Report

When reviewing the literature relating to what instructors of qualitative research courses are teaching in their courses, we found a gap regarding qualitative faculty's motivations behind what they teach and whether they use teaching tools such as rubrics in their assessment practices. We utilized general qualitative methods to explore and describe how instructors of qualitative methodology courses conceptualize and design interview-based assessments. By conducting structured interviews with five faculty members, we embraced interpretivist descriptive traditions and sought to obtain thick, rich descriptions of each participant’s perspectives and experiences. After coding interview transcripts, we created themes to represent participant beliefs that …

How Do Doctoral Students Perceive Supervision? Lessons Learned From Indonesia, Elok Putri Nimasari, Syihabul Irfan, Ariyanti Ariyanti, Ahmad Iklil Saifulloh

The Qualitative Report

Theorised in Vygotskyan sociocultural and Bakhtinian dialogical perspectives, this article addresses Indonesian postgraduates’ perceptions of their doctoral supervision for their thesis proposal. Twelve Indonesian doctoral students participated in this interpretative phenomenology study. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews lasting eight months. Drawing on interpretative phenomenological analysis, the findings identified four micro themes of sociocultural and dialogical theory (i.e., shared expertise, critical dialogue, constructive feedback, and encouraging diverse perspectives). The present study contributed empirical evidence on how doctoral students benefit from their supervisory process in sociocultural and dialogical perspectives embedded with different supervisory dimensions.

Helping To Make The Complex Accessible: A Review Of Larsen And Adu’S The Theoretical Framework In Phenomenological Research: Development And Application, Stephanie Greenquist-Marlett

The Qualitative Report

Understanding the philosophical underpinnings behind phenomenological research is critical for pursuing a proper qualitative study on one’s lived experiences. Larsen and Adu’s The Theoretical Framework in Phenomenological Research: Development and Application succeeds in breaking down the theoretical viewpoints and methodology of phenomenology and delivering it in a manageable way for researchers and practitioners alike. While novices may find the complexity of the theoretical content comparing Edward Husserl’s transcendental approach and Heidegger’s hermeneutic Dasein framework to be daunting, the book does lend itself as an instructional tool that offers easy-to-follow guidelines for those at any experience level interested in pursuing a …

Reflections And Revelations In Autoethnography: A Review Of Meaningful Journeys Of Quest And Identity Transformation, Niroj Dahal

The Qualitative Report

In this review of—Meaningful Journeys: Autoethnographies of Quest and Identity Transformation, edited by Alec Grant, Ph.D., and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lloyd-Parkes, Ph.D., I have made an effort to offer my evaluation that explores the autoethnographies of quest and identity transformation (Grant & Lloyd-Parkes, 2024). The book presents a curated anthology of personal ethnographic narratives, each grounded in the foundational concepts, philosophical insights, and linguistic roots of “journeying,” “questing,” and both ancient and contemporary interpretations of “pilgrimage.” As an autoethnographer, even during the different phases of life—personal and professional—I have been through the different roots of transformation, and now, at …

Sitting With The Data: Experimenting With Meditative Thematic Analysis, Steve Haberlin Jul 2024

Sitting With The Data: Experimenting With Meditative Thematic Analysis, Steve Haberlin

The Qualitative Report

While qualitative researchers have turned to non-traditional forms and methods to collect and analyze data, including contemplative and mindfulness approaches to inquiry relatively little has been written in the professional literature about how to specifically use meditation techniques as a qualitative data analysis method. In this article, I describe how I engaged in meditation and used mindfulness to code data and derive thematic patterns during the completion of my dissertation at the University of South Florida. I explore the notion of practicing meditation to foster a creative silence, which may encourage insights and thematic findings to emerge more spontaneously.

Sociocultural Environment And Agency In Identity Construction Of English Language Teachers, Bharat Prasad Neupane , Phd

The Qualitative Report

Identity is an emerging field in educational research focusing on how teacher education programs, training, reflective practices, and short-term interventions impact the identity negotiation of teachers (Gautam, 2018). However, this study reports how different levels of sociocultural environments influence teachers and what initiatives they take for professional development and identity construction. Drawing on Wenger’s (1998) notion of communities of practice and Norton’s (2013) investing, this study sought to uncover the interchange of the development of learning communities and teachers by investigating the life history of four secondary-level English language teachers derived through informal conversations and in-depth interviews. Teachers’ life stories …

Best Practices For Synchronous Online Teaching: A Framework To Support Engagement And Inclusion, Amy Sugar, Sue Bauer, Rohan Jowallah

FDLA Journal

The last two decades have seen an increasingly rapid advancement in the landscape of technology. While these advancements enhanced the quality of education, the COVID-19 pandemic forced institutions to rapidly transition to synchronous online teaching and learning. This transition was not often done within a sound pedagogical process. According to De Leon (2022), in many cases Covid negatively affected students’ development. The writer goes on to suggest that social, mental health, and instructional issues may have contributed to the deficit in learning currently being explored by many academics. Hence, we must create sound approaches for teaching and learning online. As …

Screen Fatigue and how AI can Assist

As a society, we are all too aware of the sudden and significant evolution of the higher education environment; classrooms that once consisted of only desks, chairs, and chalkboards in a brick-and-mortar auditorium have now largely become part of the technological landscape. We are also frequently reminded of the negative consequences of the online learning format - obesity, sleep problems, chronic neck and back issues, and "Zoom fatigue," among others. However, another relatively new "existence" now contributes to the distance learning format - Artificial Intelligence or “AI.”

In addition to its academic applications, …
