In Western Orientalism, there are two large schools with historical traditions that have made a great contribution to the development of the Central Asian direction: these are the Soviet-Russian and French schools. The French school of Central Asian studies was inferior to Soviet-Russian due to objective reasons such as limited access to the area, low resource availability and a narrow range of subjects. Only by the 1980s, French researchers, in collaboration with Soviet colleagues, had some opportunity to directly study the region.
