As with any sub-population of college students, there is a great deal of variance among individual LGBTQ students in terms of their expectations and desires when it comes to choosing or persisting at a particular college. Perhaps the one unifying objective among members of this group is a goal common to almost every student at every level of study: to find an educational environment in which the student will feel valued and supported while pursuing his or her educational goals. To this end, LGBTQ students have unique needs that historically have gone unaddressed.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest among admission officers regarding the identification of LGBT students on campus. Reliable statistics about LGBT populations on campuses across the country are all but non-existent, and many progressive institutions are aiming to remedy that problem. It is a growing concern: How can schools provide outreach and support (and increase retention rates) for LGBT students if this at-risk population continues to be invisible? FERPA is also referred to as the Buckley Amendment, which was originally created in 1974, and named after one of the proponents of the law, former New York Senator James. In my university’s Registrar’s Office, we receive requests to release non-directory student information almost daily, such as student class schedules or the grade received in a certain class. Requests come from a range of sources, including prospective employers, family members of elderly alumni, branches of the military, subpoena by courts or attorneys, and organizations seeking membership. As national focus on retention and student success increases, many states and institutions are looking for ways to increase the number of students who ultimately earn degrees. Many are realizing that the non-traditional adult student population is a historically untapped demographic that can provide almost instant, positive changes in graduation rates. This group is often considered low-hanging fruit and can be targeted to quickly complete unfinished degrees. This is especially true for institutions that have a large number of non-completers with high numbers of earned hours.
