Recent IMSA graduate Keith Winstein of Oak Park spent part of his summer doing something quite unconventional for an 18-year-old.

Winstein was the only student in a group of 11 official United States delegates to attend the first World Conference on Science (WCS) in Budapest, Hungary, from June 26 to July 1. The conference brought together 2,500 scientists from 150 countries.

For far too long, too many educational environments have been schooling environments focused on teacher- delivered and student-received information rather than learning environments focused on teacher- facilitated and student-generated knowledge. This must change. Young people are capable of extraordinary achievements and significant contributions, and it is the responsibility of educators, parents, taxpayers, policymakers and the business community to provide learning environments that make this possible. We are very proud of the arts and humanities programs at IMSA. Our faculty and students have distinguished themselves in countless ways and in our Longitudinal Study of IMSA graduates, our alumni often cite arts and humanities learning experiences as among their most valuable and cherished experiences at IMSA.

"IMSA transforms mathematics and science education through an integrative approach to teaching and learning. Advanced courses in mathematics, science, the arts and humanities emphasize connections within and across the disciplines. Students learn to integrate content and skills, demonstrating broad knowledge of important concepts. As apprentice investigators, students engage in individual and group research in all curricular areas. The Academy offered three program pathways for the classes of 2000 and 2001; the Core Program, Integrative Learning Experience (ILE), and Perspectives.
