The research question in this article is to find out in what ways students can benefit from Chinese immersion schools. It documents in depth of three areas: Chinese language skills, students’ academic success, and classroom learning environments. The author integrates research data and interviews about Chinese immersion schools students and teachers. Findings suggest that Chinese immersion schools encourage students’ Chinese language skills, improve students’ academic success, and provide effective classroom learning environments.

After the 2016 presidential election of Donald Trump, many of my elementary refugee, immigrant, and native-born English Learners (ELs) became distraught with the safety of their future in the United States, and that of their family and friends. In my school building, EL students were negatively acting out both socially and academically. Our mainstream and EL teachers, along with administration, struggled to help this traumatized population. This capstone explores strategies that Chinese immersion teachers can utilize to increase students’ use of Chinese language in the classroom. The literature on factors discouraging students from speaking target language in the foreign language classroom and characteristics of effective foreign language instruction were reviewed in the capstone. The reasons why students need to speak more target language in the foreign language classroom and second language learning and teaching standards were explained. The driving question in this capstone is, how can I design a Spanish immersion social studies unit to bring student driven inquiry to a suburban elementary school while still meeting state and district requirements? This capstone describes one teacher’s exploration of models and elements of Student Driven Inquiry and the creation of a Spanish Immersion Social Studies unit that guides students to learn through their own inquiry and the model of Project Based Learning. This capstone project documents the process and justification for creating the unit and includes all necessary lessons and resources for implementing the unit itself.

The purpose of this project was to create a Spanish reading intervention program that incorporated multisensory strategies. It documents the creation of a program based on research on reading instruction and interventions, dyslexia, multisensory strategies, and the Spanish language. The format and structured was adapted for Spanish, inspired by Winsor Learning’s Orton-Gillingham based Sonday System program that is in English. The program created through this project includes a lesson plan book with thirty-six lessons and ten progress checks, a word book, and cards that correlate to the sounds being introduced in each lesson.
