The purpose of this project was to analyze the impact communication and collaboration between special and general educators have on student achievement and school culture through a literature review. Additionally, the project was implemented to evaluate how different forms of communication can be used to begin to bridge the communication and collaboration gap that currently exists in a large-scale suburban school setting. The homeless highly mobile (HHM) student population can easily be overlooked and begin to fall through the cracks within the school system. As a result, the achievement gap for this vulnerable population has grown at a disproportionate rate. The purpose of this Capstone project is to discover how adult-child conversations affect preschoolers’ oral language development. The project consists of a literature review and the creation of a website. Research shows that oral language development in early childhood is related to social-emotional development and later success in literacy (Cohen, 2005; Lonigan & Shanahan, 2009; NAEYC, 2009; Hartas, D., 2012). Children’s oral language development is influenced by teachers’ emotional, instructional, and organizational support, including, language modeling and feedback, and the closeness of teacher-student relationships. The author’s inquiry was: How do implicit bias and the self-fulfilling prophecy phenomenon affect literacy performance in elementary students. Implicit or unconscious bias is known for causing issues with judges and police officers, but new awareness has been brought to the realm of education and how these biases can widen the achievement gap in literacy and other academic areas. The research question addressed in this project was, how can I improve the math performance of intermediate students using game-based learning? It provides multiple sources of research on game-based learning and website design, along with the original creation of an authentic game-based learning website; gamebaseded.com. Throughout the project chapters, the author describes the limitations and benefits of the game-based learning website. The documented benefits include increased engagement, participation, and academic scores.
