To meet the needs of their patrons, academic libraries make available a variety of items for loan far beyond the traditional library materials of books and journals. These items can range from technological equipment such as laptops and digital cameras to other nontraditional items such as board games, DVDs, and kits. This poster session will present a summary of unique items in academic library collections and a set of best practices for loaning these items based on the results of a survey of academic libraries. This article reviews the history of university development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and discusses the impact of neoliberal policies. This will be followed by an examination of the problems facing universities in the region. The following questions will be explored: (a) Are the existing universities in SSA serving the development needs of the region? (b) Are these universities up to the task of moving SSA out of the predicaments it faces such as famine, HIV/AIDS, poverty, diseases, debt, and human rights abuses? The study analyzes sexual aggression according to hyper-gender roles and fraternity/sorority membership at a midsize midwestern university. The research examed whether hyper-gender roles affect an individuals sexual experience and whether fraternity and sorority communities are more likely to endorse hyper-gender roles. This study provides a proposal for crucial volunteer services to fill the gap for overburdened school counselors when parents are unable to engage in Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT), a highly effective intervention for childhood problems. CPRT has been successfully adapted for use with individuals other than the child’s parents. The researcher in this pilot study adapted CPRT for use with senior citizen volunteers who often possess untapped abilities and talents. Seniors received several weeks of training, and then met with children for 1/2 hour supervised, video-taped play sessions for several weeks. Childhood adjustment problems were assessed before and after the …

Colleges today are asked to provide greater proof that they are providing quality educational experiences to their students. There has been a growing need for student affairs to provide documentation that their areas also impact learning and student experience. However, many student affairs professionals are overwhelmed by the idea of assessment and are looking for examples of best practices in this area. Several years ago the American College Personnel Association's Commission Director for Assessment and Evaluation developed the Assessment Skills and Knowledge Standards for practitioners. This document provides exampes of these standards in practice.

This essay discusses the successes and challenges of teaching a particular cross-curricular course that focused on controversial issues appearing in scientific research and dystopian literature. The course studied narratives that wrestle with ethical concerns surrounding “progress” (societal achievements, technological advancement, scientific discoveries, and so forth). Contemporary debates and specific issues addressed throughout this course included cloning, stem cell research, black market organ transplants, human trafficking, surveillance technology, euthanasia, and capital punishment.
