More Educated And More Equal? A Comparative Analysis Of Female Education And Employment In Japan, China And India, Sucharita Sinha Mukherjee
More Educated And More Equal? A Comparative Analysis Of Female Education And Employment In Japan, China And India, Sucharita Sinha Mukherjee
Economics Faculty Publications
This paper attempts to explore the connections between expanding female education and the participation of women in paid employment in Japan, China and India, three of Asia's largest economies. Analysis based on existing data and literature shows that despite the large expansion in educational access in these countries in the last half century, women have lacked egalitarian labour market opportunities. A combination of social discouragement and individual choice largely explains the withdrawal, non-participation or intermittent female presence in the labour force, notwithstanding increased educational access. In taking stock of these issues and debates across these countries, it is argued that …

Making Connections: Transforming General Education At The College Of St. Benedict And St. John's University, College Of Saint Benedict And Saint John's University
Academic Affairs Publications
We propose to move from a cafeteria-style general education distribution system that emphasizes the “collection of courses,” to an integrated, purposeful, and reflective general education program that places emphasis on “making connections.” Implementing this vision for general education will require a significant paradigm shift in the way we design and deliver the Common Curriculum. This paradigm shift has at least five different features:
First, it implies a shift away from an emphasis on course content to a paradigm that also stresses student learning and the fulfillment of essential learning outcomes. While course content will still be important, this report assumes …

Liberal Arts Colleges And Art Fairs: The Proximity Of Summer Arts Festivals To Liberal Arts Colleges, Hannah R. Haas
Liberal Arts Colleges And Art Fairs: The Proximity Of Summer Arts Festivals To Liberal Arts Colleges, Hannah R. Haas
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
Purpose: Client Professor James Poff paints and draws on the side of his teaching post in the Biology Department. After finishing his tenure teaching, he would like to spend the summer traveling to art festivals in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois. He believes that his art will be most widely accepted at art fairs that are within a 25 mile radius of a liberal arts college. He is interested in knowing what summer art festivals those are. Methods: From the websites of the Department of Tourism for Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois I obtained the dates, names and addresses of …
German Federal Employment Agency: A Summer Internship Experience, Jessica D. Raboin
German Federal Employment Agency: A Summer Internship Experience, Jessica D. Raboin
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
The Federal Employment Agency is the largest provider of labor market services in Germany, with over 700 agencies, an institute for employment research, international placement services, a university, leadership academy, and family benefits office, among other subdivisions. The agency is publicly-funded and has several integral responsibilities that are outlined in my poster. My interest in career counseling, labor market management and social services spurred my interest in independently arranging an internship for summer 2014 with an agency near Munich, Germany.

A Summer In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Mary Franz
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
As a fellow for the Center for Global Education's Summer Global Internship Program in 2014, I traveled to Bosnia and Herzegovina where I had the opportunity to study, work, and volunteer abroad. It was a summer of growing in compassion and understanding; a summer of experiencing new cultures, foods, and religions; a summer of finding new passions and forming friendships; and most of all, a summer of transformation in which I gained new leadership, professional, and international skills.

La República Dominicana: Las Terrenas, Stefanie M. Havemeier
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
Off the sandy beaches of Las Terrenas, The Dominican Republic, lies La Fundación Mahatma Gandhi and an energetic, ambitious, kind-hearted, and humble man, José Bourget, founder of the foundation. With the help of Bourget, six interns from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University lead summer camps at the foundation and in a nearby neighborhood. Children picked up trash, learned about dental hygiene, participated in new games, banged on musical instruments, and shouted out their favorite foods while learning about nutrition. The children in Las Terrenas and neighboring communities enjoyed summer camp activities but what the interns of …

Lutheran Social Services Service Learning Project, Timothy D. Immelman, Cullen T. Mcanally, Dino V. Saracco
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
Background: Lutheran Social Services (LSS) is an organization whose mission is to “express the love of Christ for all people through service that inspires hope, changes lives, and builds community.” A significant part of what they do involves leading afterschool activities that promote the learning of specific academic and life skills. Those learning objectives are as stated as follows: (1) working together, (2) communication, (3) following instructions, and (4) personal boundaries. As liberal arts students, we provide external perspectives regarding ways to enhance their four learning objectives.
Because they have our help in developing new leisure activities for their students, …
