Eating Disorder Risk, Exercise Dependence, And Body Weight Dissatisfaction Among Female Nutrition And Exercise Science University Majors, Natalie Harris, David Gee, Debra D'Acquisto, Dana Ogan, Kelly Pritchett
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Background and Aims: Past research has examined eating disorder risk among college students majoring in Nutrition and has suggested an increased risk, while other studies contradict these results. Exercise Science majors, however, have yet to be fully examined regarding their risk for eating disorders and exercise dependence. Based on pressures to fit the image associated with careers related to these two disciplines, research is warranted to examine the potential risk for both eating disorder and exercise dependence. The purpose of this study is to compare eating disorder risk, exercise dependence, and body weight dissatisfaction (BWD) between Nutrition and Exercise Science …

An Evaluation Of Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Assertiveness Skills To College Students, Savannah Warrington, Sadie Lovett
An Evaluation Of Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Assertiveness Skills To College Students, Savannah Warrington, Sadie Lovett
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Assertiveness skills are related to a variety of life factors including stress levels, social relationships, social fears, and anxiety. Previous research has shown that engaging in nonassertive behavior can have negative effects, and assertive behaviors can lead to a healthier life (Eldeeb, Enstar, & Eldosoky, 2014; Elliot & Gramling, 1990; Morgan, 1974; Larijani, Aghajanie, Baheriraei, & Neiestanank, 2010). The purpose of the current research was to determine if behavioral skills training (BST) was effective in teaching assertiveness skills to college students and if the skills would generalize to novel situations. BST is a method for teaching skills that uses instructions, …
An Exploration Of How Using Best Practices Curriculum With Tutoring Affects Kindergarten Literacy: A Literature Review, Cay Collins
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Early interventions are being used to improve reading skills in children. The purpose of this literature review is to examine the best practices used in kindergarten literacy. The review will look at some of the current tools used in schools that have produced positive results. It will also examine the Wildcat Buddies tutoring program at Central Washington University, which uses the Sound Partners curriculum. The review will focus on how using current programs with tutors may positively impact literacy outcomes for early learners.
Higher Vocational Education And The Demands Of Rapid Development In China, Xiao Han
Higher Vocational Education And The Demands Of Rapid Development In China, Xiao Han
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
With the dramatic development of its economy and society, China became one of the world’s largest economies. However, China takes longer to develop and train skilled technicians than it does to build factories. As the industrial base expanded, the need for vocational education to keep up with the escalating demand for technical expertise and skills became increasingly important in China. Liuzhou City, as one of western China’s most important industrial cities, is an example of this kind of rapid growth and of the way in which continued development now depends on vocational education. To meet the demands of the growing …
Employing Feedback Training To Bolster The Quantity And Quality Of Peer-Feedback Flowing To Student Teachers, Eric Hougan
Employing Feedback Training To Bolster The Quantity And Quality Of Peer-Feedback Flowing To Student Teachers, Eric Hougan
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Current education reforms aim to improve teacher effectiveness by calling for high-quality teacher preparation programs that provides preservice teachers with impactful learning opportunities. At the heart of this teacher training is delivering high-quality feedback to the preservice teachers during their practicum experience. Yet, there is limited research on the student teachers’ feedback infrastructure, including the quality, quantity, and medium for offering student teachers regular, meaningful, and useful feedback on their emerging classroom practice. Employing design-based research and social network analysis methodologies, this study: (a) sheds light on the student teachers’ feedback (social) network from within a traditional teacher preparation program; …
The Effects Of Assessment Preparation For The Improvement Of Course Placement And Student Satisfaction At Tacoma Community College, Kari Twogood
All Graduate Projects
There is significant focus on graduation rates and persistence of students in higher education. Lengthy sequences of developmental education have been shown to have detrimental effects on the persistence and graduation rates of students. This study reviewed the research that has been performed concerning persistence in developmental education. A survey of incoming or current students was conducted to study the effects of offering an ACCUPLACER® preparation workshop at Tacoma Community College. The survey collected 733 unduplicated responses. The data indicated that students feel more anxiety as a result of attending the workshop prior to taking the ACCUPLACER® assessment. The data …

Wage Distribution Impacts Of Higher Education Faculty Unionization, Charles S. Wassell Jr., David W. Hedrick, Steven E. Henson, John M. Krieg
Wage Distribution Impacts Of Higher Education Faculty Unionization, Charles S. Wassell Jr., David W. Hedrick, Steven E. Henson, John M. Krieg
Economics Faculty Scholarship
The literature on the effects of unions on the distribution of wages at the macroeconomic and inter-industry levels has given little attention to the effects at the firm level. At the same time, research on collective bargaining impacts in higher education has focused on the overall wage level rather than on the distribution of salaries. Using panel data on individual faculty members, we find faculty unionization to be associated with a significant flattening of the wage distribution across academic disciplines. This has implications for why faculty might choose to unionize, even in the absence of an overall wage premium.
The Impact Of The Arts For Students With Moderate To Severe Disabilities, Rebekah Fuss
The Impact Of The Arts For Students With Moderate To Severe Disabilities, Rebekah Fuss
All Master's Theses
Students with moderate to severe disabilities are often left out of arts programs, especially in rural areas where resources are limited and drama, music and art classes are often not available. This action research study focused on a small group of students in a self-contained classroom in a high school. The classroom teacher worked with a teaching artist to start an art program for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Even though there are limited resources in rural areas, it is still possible to create a quality arts integration program which requires planning and effective collaboration with other teachers and …

While competency-based education is growing, standardized tools for evaluating the unique characteristics of course design in this domain are still under development. This preliminary research study evaluated the effectiveness of a rubric developed for assessing course design of competency-based courses in an undergraduate Information Technology and Administrative Management program. The rubric, which consisted of twenty-six individual measures, was used to evaluate twelve new courses. Additionally, the final assessment scores of nine students who completed nine courses in the program were evaluated to determine if a correlation exists between student success and specific indicators of quality in the course design. The …

The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of the use of music in the form of a song with instructional lyrics on the attention of children with developmental disabilities. The study took place in a self-contained special education classroom, which served third through fifth grade students. A single-subject with ABA or reversal design (Creswell, 2012) was utilized, including five days of baseline, 15 days of intervention, and five days of reversal data collection. During the intervention phase, the teacher sang a cappella an original song with instructional lyrics that explain the type of attentive behaviors that students …
Obtaining Cultural Competency Skills: Perceptions From Supervisors In Higher Education, Veronica Gomez Vilchis
Obtaining Cultural Competency Skills: Perceptions From Supervisors In Higher Education, Veronica Gomez Vilchis
All Master's Theses
A program evaluation was done on the supervisor training at Central Washington University to obtain the perceptions of supervisors on cultural competency. Eighteen supervisors were interviewed. The results demonstrated supervisors’ support of incorporating cultural competency as part of their professional development. However, supervisors indicated the current supervisor training does not give them tools to interact effectively with diverse populations. Implications for including cultural competency skills for supervisors in higher education are discussed.
