Adapted Shared Reading: A Study Of Its Effectiveness In Inclusive Preschool Classrooms, Andrea Golloher
Adapted Shared Reading: A Study Of Its Effectiveness In Inclusive Preschool Classrooms, Andrea Golloher
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
Adapted shared storybook reading has been demonstrated to be effective at increasing both engagement and comprehension during shared storybook reading for elementary-aged students with exceptional needs. Research on these methods has primarily been conducted with students in self-contained elementary classrooms and has lacked evidence of generalization to new texts. This study examined the use of the adapted shared reading program in inclusive early childhood classrooms. Using a multiple baseline across participants design, the program was shown to be effective at increasing engagement, listening comprehension, and communication during shared reading interactions. These skills were generalized to novel adapted texts. Teachers’ perceptions …

Literacy Tutoring Strategies Of America Reads University-Level Tutors, Mauricio Cadavid
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore, study, outline and describe tutoring strategies applied by American Reads (AR) tutors and non-America Reads (nAR) tutors helping young tutees develop early literacy skills. There is limited research on the implementation of effective tutoring strategies during one-on-one tutoring with elementary school children in terms of early literacy development. Most of the literature is split between peer tutoring and program tutoring. This lack of research presents a particular challenge when it comes to identifying an effective tutor and effective tutoring methodologies. Using a qualitative approach, this study utilizes survey data, session recordings, and …

Technological Literacy – Not Just You And Your Computer, Joseph Scarcella, Susan Daniels
Technological Literacy – Not Just You And Your Computer, Joseph Scarcella, Susan Daniels
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
One might argue that the word technology is one of the most misunderstood and misused terms in common usage today. Many believe technology to be synonymous with computers, the internet and other high-tech media. This is limited and short sighted view indeed! Technology encompasses both simple and complex artifacts used daily. Pencils, toothbrushes, zippers and toothpicks – not to mention Velcro (!) – for instance, are all examples of what might be considered relatively modern examples of technology. Often, the wonder of “everyday” invention is lost in our current notions of technology. Yet, it is an investigative inquiry into the …

Five Approaches To Literacy In Correctional Education, Thom Gehring, Gary H. Sherwin
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
This article introduces literacy from a few “big picture” perspectives, and then reviews five paradigms that have shaped the teaching and learning of literacy in residential confinement institutions for juveniles and adults. The paradigms are specific to correctional education, but they will be familiar to all alternative teachers and advocates of literacy instruction.

Empowering Pre-Adolescent Second-Language Learners In The Middle School Years, Robert Charles Quintana

The Effects Of Parent Volunteers On A Child's Literacy Growth, Francesca Marie Formolo
The Effects Of Parent Volunteers On A Child's Literacy Growth, Francesca Marie Formolo
Theses Digitization Project
Research has shown that the more active parents are in their child's education the more likely their child is to achieve academic success. Based on these findings this research project focused on how parent volunteers influenced their child's literacy growth. It is hypothesized that as the parent spends time in the classroom they are given more opportunities to interact with other members of the classroom community. It is believed that this interaction will influence the way in which the parent works with their child and have a positive influence on their child's literacy growth.
Creative Drama As A Source For Literacy Development, B. Joanne Kirkner
Creative Drama As A Source For Literacy Development, B. Joanne Kirkner
Theses Digitization Project
Students achieve knowledge by different means. I find that a child allowed to learn from one's personal style finds purpose in learning and develops a desire to read. With this in mind I have designed this project to be used as a resource for teachers wanting to implement creative drama, in the classroom, as an avenue for improving reading abilities of low-progress readers.
